There is a vicious cycle of 4chan->Reddit->9gag->Facebook->old people->marketing departments in terms of 'memes'.
The classic examples of image macros and rage comics are years old, but most people are only finding out about them now, due to the slow trend. And each step along the "Natural Progression of Meme Cancer" (actual term, did not make it up) shows the meme deviating from its origins until it is plain not funny anymore. And then the final stage when companies try to use them to look "cool" and "in the know", when they really just look like they're following a 3 year old fad for 12 year olds.
I frequent both 4chan and reddit so I know about all this crap, but
