You can't make a meme - a meme is a thing which travels all over the internet, spread by thousands and thousands of emails etc etc. It's the spreading that makes something a meme. Memes can't be made by one person. (Unless they're an egotist shouting "ME ME!")

This.
And add on the fact that these aren't even "memes", these are image macros, which has long been considered a dead meme by the people who created them.

Indeed. There are a few genuine memes in this style (such the O RLY? owl and the original CAN HAZ CHEESEBURGER cat) but most memes are things like Dramatic Chipmunk, the Jedi Squirrels, and (possibly the original internet meme?) Dancing Baby.

Here I just thought I finally learned what a meme was, and now some people are saying that isn't even it. I'm old and confused.

There is a vicious cycle of 4chan->Reddit->9gag->Facebook->old people->marketing departments in terms of 'memes'.
The classic examples of image macros and rage comics are years old, but most people are only finding out about them now, due to the slow trend. And each step along the "Natural Progression of Meme Cancer" (actual term, did not make it up) shows the meme deviating from its origins until it is plain not funny anymore. And then the final stage when companies try to use them to look "cool" and "in the know", when they really just look like they're following a 3 year old fad for 12 year olds.
I frequent both 4chan and reddit so I know about all this crap, but
tl;dr these memes haven't been funny for years.

Only in a Progarchives can you find objections to a thing made just for fun, objections based on the actual proper use of a stupid internet invention. Oh no prog fans aren't pretentious no they aren't...

This isn't even bad. You should see the rages on sites like /mu/ at people doing crap like this.
We even have threads specifically dedicated to laughing at people who don't know our internet conventions.

I guess "just for fun" doesn't really exist on the internet anymore...
