I defined "Classic Era" as the era in which the albums are consistently rated at around 4 stars, though there may be an album/albums that are lower within the selection.

I went "Aerosol Grey Machine".  It plants the seeds that would be perfected in my favorite phase of VDGG, "The Least...", "H to He...", & "Pawn Hearts".

If I had to choose one after the 1st phase, I'd definitely go with "The Quiet Zone..."  The "Cat's Eye-Sphinx-Chemical-Sphinx Return" sequence that ends the album is perfection.

Went with Aerosol as well.  I really enjoy most of the album.  Love the first half of World Record, but Meurglys III leaves me kind of cold.  It's no Plague of Lighthouse Keepers for sure.  The rest are all good too, but not as good as AGM.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Love AGM dearly, but 'A Grounding In Numbers' gets my vote.

I haven't heard the three older ones, but I love Trisector.

The Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome is dead good and is a good example of Hammill's late 70s change in approach to vocals - and Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever and Last Frame both stunning - always found the definitive Sphinx is the K Group one on The Margin +
