Kansas has been one my fave bands for a long long time.  I have since found other bands that I enjoy even more, but I still have a soft spot for Kansas.  I don't think they are talked about as much as they should be, so maybe this will help.Smile

I still prefer Leftoverture over all others, and I like Kansas a lot. It has a combination of youthful inspiration and experience, along with a touch of desperation (if it did not sell well it would have been the end of their career and there was no indication it would sell), which makes all the songs among their best. The best elements of rock came together at the same time.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

Haven't heard the first two, but I have the other four on this list, and of those I prefer Leftoverture. Not gonna vote though. I'll come back when I've heard at least the first two.

I guess Leftoverture, but I don't really care for it.

Voted for Two For The Show, one of the (many) great live double albums of the classic period of Prog.
As studio album Leftoverture is my fav but Two For The Show has the best of their classic repertoire and the playing is direct and amazing, combining energy and quality in a great way.

Went with "Masque".  As with most 70's Kansas albums I overlook the cringeworthy attempts at radio airplay ("It Takes a Woman's Love to Make a Man" & "Two Cents Worth") and hold up "Icarus", "Mysteries & Mayhem" & "The Pinnacle" as great prog songs (though they should've made "Mysteries" & "Pinnacle" one uninterrupted song)

I selected "other", and not because I don't like these albums, but because I've always had a soft spot for both "Monolith" and "Audio-Visions."  They weren't as progressive, but there are still some great standout tracks on both of them!

Song For America for me. From Leftoverture on, Kansas got a bit too radio-friendly for my tastes. Love their first 3 albums! Two for the Show, especially the remastered edition with extra tracks, is great as well.

Thank you for accenting the best parts of Masque.  Both Kansas I and Song for America have a few "cringeworthy" tunes as well but, over all, those are their superlative three albums.  Leftoverture has notable prog-worthy classics, but you could tell they were succumbing to the Don Kirschner / CBS "clean sound" by then.  Point of Know Return is appalling, and I lost interest in them at that album.  I have listened to portions of Monolith and Audio-visions, and their are some redeemable tunes.  The first three, however, stand out above the rest...

Ya, Don Kirschner...how else can you explain a band putting "Down the Road" on the same album as "Hymn to the Atman" LOL

I'm against live albums being in an album poll, but I voted for Two anyway.  For their studio albums, I give it up to Point.  That was their pinnacle. The lyrics of sparks Of The Tempest still brings tears to my eyes.

Big Brother is watching and he likes what he sees
A world for the taking, when he's ready to squeeze
The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game

Soothsayer saying now tell me no lies
What is this madness that is filling the skies
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain

Even though it's not their most progressive album, I like Freaks of Nature as a whole the best. Its dark themes and strong violin presence make it the perfect album.

At the risk of overquoting lyrics -

Darkness is spreading like a spot on the sun
The dead are the living in the age of the gun
While everyone clamors for the justice they seek
The World is corrupted and the strong take the weak

The future is managed, and your freedom's a joke
You don't know the difference as you put on the yoke
The less that you know the more you fall into place
A cog in the wheel, there is no soul in your face

I remember buying Masque when I was 16.  A prog friend recommended it and I loved the cover so I bought it.  When I got home and put the vinyl on and the 1st thing I heard was "It Takes a Woman's Love to Make a Man" I thought WTF!!!  Then I heard "Two Cents Worth" and I thought, OMG I've just blown a week's allowance on this???  Then I heard the rest of the album and thought...this makes no sense at all Confused

My opinion may not be a popular one, but I think their debut album is brilliant and then with each new album they get a little worse.
