My picks, with a bit of a twist (include the runner up in parenthesis)
Rush - Working Man (What you're doing) Fly By Night - Anthem (Fly By Night) Caress of Steel - The Necromancer (Bastille Day) 2112- 2112 (A Passage to Bangkok) A Farewell to Kings - Xanadu (Cygnus X-1) Hemispheres - La Villa Strangiato (The Trees) Permanent Waves - Natural Science (Freewill) Moving Pictures - The Camera Eye (YYZ) Signals - Subdivisions (The Analog Kid) Grace Under Pressure - The Enemy Within (Distant Early Warning/Red Sector A - I can't pick, they're both great)

Rush - Here Again: a surprisingly successful attempt at the blues Fly By Night - title track: just edges out By-Tor for the supremely tasteful guitar work Caress of Steel - The Fountain of Lamneth: it's really 6 songs stuck together into a suite, and if I had to pick one of them it would be No One at the Bridge; Geddy's voice is amazing on that one. 2112 - title track: just so emotionally raw and poignant A Farewell to Kings - Xanadu: one of their best 70's tracks, with some simple but profound lyrics Hemispheres - title track: compositionally one of their strongest songs ever Permanent Waves - Freewill: stupid lyrics but builds up to a brilliant climax in such an incredible fashion that I can't not pick it. I would go for Natural Science, though, if the version on the album had sounded like the Different Stages rendition Moving Pictures - YYZ: high-energy, tight, and intricate Signals - Chemistry: Alex absolutely rips it up Grace Under Pressure - Distant Early Warning: can barely decide between that and Red Sector A, but DEW wins because it just might be the definitive Rush song.

Oh DEW is definitely worth mentioning, and I agree that Natural Science is a gem from Different stages but not so much on the studio version
|
I love both versions, but the arrangement on the live version is far superior, and the full sound and energy behind it elevate it far above the comparatively dry studio version. It's actually a very harmonically and melodically simple song, so the extra "oomph" on the live version helps to bulk it up a bit.

Rush - Working Man Fly by Night - By-Tor and the Snow Dog Caress of Steel - The Fountain of Lamneth 2112 - 2112 A Farewell to Kings - Xanadu Hemispheres - Hemispheres Permanent Waves - The Spirit of Radio Moving Pictures - Red Barchetta Signals - The Analog Kid Grace under Pressure - Between the Wheels
Tom Sawyer is quite overrated in my opinion. Good lyrics, but there are songs I prefer on Moving Pictures over that song (everything but Limelight actually). Permanent Waves was my toughest choice, as I love both Spirit of Radio and Natural Science equally. Fly by Night was my easiest choice.
