It was a progression forward for the band and the fine writer influencing the band to progress was Michael Dunford. Although I like Ashes Are Burning a bit more, I understand the complexity to the Scheherazade epic and appreciate. It's merely adapting the mind set for it to understand how to go about enjoying anything about it. For example....Some people in life have to be in the right mood to watch a period film.

I also prefer Ashes Are Burning and Turn of the Card to Scheherazade though they are all well done imho.

Annie Haslam's voice... well, and Tout's piano too, of course, and that Renaissance magic I really like. It's a beautiful album, however, I like "Turn of the Cards" much better... for me that's the Renaissance masterpiece. On this album, the best is the title epic, of course, but it actually only holds my attention for about the first half, and the last few minutes. The instrumental orchestral passages before the end sound a bit uninspired and unrelated to me, and break the flow of the song, so that it doesn't feel like a cohesive epic song.

I think you have to have a minimum number of posts before you can vote in a poll and start a topic.

I'm going to let this one run for a third week until people comment on it.

Hard to say. It's Magma and it has the Magma distinctive sounds and compositions (except for Merci). Saying what MDK has to special is the same of saying why one likes Magma. Personally I prefer Kohntarkoshz (or how the hell it's written).

Canterbury  meets prog rock with some fusion thrown in....what's not to like.
Not to mention Stewart on keys and Hillage on guitar.
Thumbs Up

I've always been bored by the record x_x

Canterbury has better to offer, or whatever genre it's a part of.

We covered it on page 24 in January.

For almost a year we've been discussing a different album every week.
The first post has an up-to-date list of them all.

Not necessarily one of the best Canterbury albums but pretty solid and very enjoyable stuff.  Perhaps its reputation precedes it, given that it features Dave Stewart AND Hillage. I prefer Egg for Stewart and Gong for Hillage.

I understand...I've always been bored by Dave Matthews .  Wink

Seriously I'd like to know what a young prog fan likes in the way of Canterbury....your favorites..?

I'm also a fan of EGG and GONG but their albums can be spotty at times.
Hatfield, Caravan, and Nat health are better imo.  Fish Rising is often cited as the second Khan LP but imho it's not as strong.

Do like Hatfield and Health.  Not a big fan of Caravan, too much on the safe side of Canterbury for my taste.

Yes....Caravan is more along the pop side of Canterbury for sure but there are always one or two tracks on their albums that get into the longer more adventurous fusion things.
