So a friend of mine is into Sigur Ros and I want to help her get more into the post-rock sound. I don't listen to A LOT of post-rock in particular but know the big names (Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, GY!BE, all that good stuff). What are some bands that can kind of ease a casual fan of Sigur Ros more into the post-rock scene?
I consider drone metal to be progressive...

Ef
Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson
Mogwai
Jakob

Those are some quality post-rock bands that can be easy for a newbie.

Not exactly post-rock but Boards of Canada.

Maybe not like Sigur Ros (but then again who really sounds like them anyways?), but I find that Brazilian Labirinto mixes a lot of similar ambiances in their debut album Anatema:

The two latest efforts of Anathema and Steven Wilson's Insurgentes came to mind as well.

Not really. Insurgentes often gets very noisy and heavy. It's heavier and darker than any Sigur Ros I've heard.

Yeah, but so does Mogwai (in my experience). The people i know who like Sigur Ros dig this record as well. But yeah it's certainly very different, I just thought it fitted the "post" label, which goes a bit beyond "long songs light and heavy moments"

I know a band called Zigur Roz where the singer's line is "Yoo sat along the raging inferno" That's not actually what he is saying, as he is speaking gibberish, but I've come to understand they are very similar to Sigur Ros

Fair enough.

You should listen to Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk ASAP if you haven't already. Also try Bark Psychosis if you liked Talk Talk and listen to Labradford (more on the ambient side, Mi media naranja is a great album) and Gregor Samsa (55:12).

Maybe Dead Can Dance - Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun has the right ethereal atmospheric feel?

Thanks for all the suggestions. This isn't just for me actually, I'm trying to help a post-rock newbie out as well while at the same time expanding my horizons beyond GY!BE and such. Mogwai is a very cool band, and I've heard a lot of good stuff about late Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis.

Somebody mentioned Insurgentes earlier. It is surreal, yes. But tracks like Salvaging get pretty damned dark, although Harmony Korine and the title are great tracks (especially live). M

Never really cared for SR and there really are not many who sound like them. For post-rock, tell your friend to try Tortoise and The Samuel Jackson Five and ignore all those third-rate Mogwai-wannabees.

Her name is calla. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxnkZISBTok

Summer fades away. They are from China , some of their songs  have Chinese folk influences.

I haven't heard too much sigur ros stuff, so I don't know if my recommendations are the correct ones.
