The Grove Of Eglantine is one of my faves.
Any thoughts on the live album Caught In The Act ?? I purchased the album in the 90's, a local Aussie pressing and it was a single LP. Just a few weeks ago, I scored the dbl LP version at an NYC record convention (it was a rather small gathering, I did expect more....) and I'm really excited to hear it. Still abroad so I just peruse the album. The complete track-list looks terrific.

I do Tom. Some people are so bothered by Dennis' kinda cheesy dramatics. To me it gives the band personality. At heart he's a romantic and refreshingly different from so many of the template 70s rockers.

^^ True. I suppose those who bag Styx probably just don't 'get it'.
Now, I've never been a massive fan of Boston or REO Speedwagon, or even Toto, but I'll never diss them the way some folks pay out on Styx.
It is curious how many of us are equally at home with Styx as we are with Hammill, or Vander, or Procol.......

i used to love Styx as a kid, then i didn't like them - probably due to the pieces of eight, cornerstone, paradise theatre, and kilroy was here albums, but now i kind of like them again.
I get why people don't like them - they really duo have kind of a cheese sound that glues them firmly to the times to the point where their music is often used in films to convey that sense of cheese.
i still don't like the albums i mentioned, but i really do like equinox, crystal ball, and grand illusion.

no while I was there.. perhaps in the years since it was. I do know the emphasis was, and likely continued to be, adding all the new bands out there and worrying less about playing musical chairs with groups already in the database. I know we never voted up or down on moving them, just wasn't a a priority.

I'll even cop to liking Babe and First Time.  Sappy, syrupy, cheesy, blah blah blah whatever. They're nice romantic ballads with good melody.

First Time is quite a pretty track. Don't be afraid of...... lovin' it  Just read some Styx reviews, including some I've done, and my opinions have changed slightly. Time to re-assess some parts.

I'd say that Neal Morse digs Styx. Just a thought, coz I think the main riff to Motherless Children reminds me of something DeYoung would come up with.

Crystal Ball and Pieces of Eight are both great albums. Styx is more progressive than they're normally given credit for; their sound constantly evolved over time. I would say that Crystal Ball is the more progressive of the two, so that's why I picked it.

I have their Greatest Hits album and will play it occasionally. Babe is a great (albeit fairly cheesy) love song. Come Sail Away is a great sing-along song. My personal favorite is Too Much Time on My Hands - "is it any wonder I'm sane at all?" yeah.

I haven't heard the post-Kilroy albums, though I have the DVD of The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight performance of recent years (very good renditions, although what's with that silly looking synth that Gowen fella is using ??)
The Caught In The Act - Live album is worthwhile.

To be honest, Styx has many very good albums imo. My favorite probably would be Crystal Ball in the end.
