Another band that wore down heaps of needles on my turntable over the years.  I played the "operas", Who's Next, Leeds, the early albums (anyone remember the "twofer" albums My Generation/Magic Bus and A Quick One/Who Sell Out?)....played their classics to death.  Great story....got caught shoplifting the Meaty, Beaty album when I was 11 'cause I had to have it but had no dosh.  Thought I'd just tuck it under my arm and walk out of the shop.....ass still red from that debacle. 
 
Now, when it's time to put the Who on, I love By Numbers....first heard it as a wee lad but, of course, could never understand where Townshend was coming from.  Also, the expanded Odds and Sods renders a 3 star record a 5 star....great Who stuff without having to dig into the bootleg bins.  I've even softened on Who Are You and Face Dances, but Daltrey (and weak material) kills It's Hard (though Cry If You Want was a gas).  Endless Wire was a nice surprise....not a classic but nice stuff.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

True. But of what they have, most are fantastic. There are not too many bands or solo artists that have seismic type efforts, a good set of tunes is the most anyone can reasonably expect.

I think most rock bands are effective for roughly 5 years or so, sometimes this can be extended as certain live albums and compilations fill out time. The Who were most effective from 1964 - 1978. Still there have been other archive releases that are very good.

For a band that's been around since the 60s, they don't have a lot of real classic albums. Who's Next and Quadrophenia stand out a mile.

While it's probably not going to get to number 1 on the pop charts here thought I'd mention the super expanded Odds and Sods. Once a single quite good out takes LP, it's now a 2 LP (or 1 CD) expanded issue and really worthwhile. Should be on this list too... As mentioned Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy is one of those compilations (like Tull's Living In The Past) that is a compilation of non-album material aka bonus tracks. Don't let record company bureaucracy put you off.

Topic - Quadrophenia may be the best Who album ever, but when faced with the best of Tommy and the wall to wall quality of Who's Next... I pick - the album with Goin' Mobile on it. The best song The Who never performed live. Plus it works like a charm at cheering me up. Sell Out may be the best album of the 1960s (which IS saying something). Probably the best concept album and most likely the most fun.

Had the album Who is Doctor Who?been included, then I would have voted for it, but I do love various The Who albums.  I guess Tommy just over Quadrophenia.  It's Hard was the first cassette I ever bought.
