I am not sure if the band NDIO have ever been considered for PA or whether or not they would qualify. NDIO were formed from the ashes of the Holland-based Hugh Hopper Band and features the ex-Soft Machine bassist working with familiar names as well as new faces. The end result is an exciting European jazz/rock blend that balances inspired soloing and improvisation within carefully crafted ensemble work.
They released the album Airback on Cuneiform Records in 2005. http://www.amazon.com/Airback-Ndio/dp/B000AMYJGO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383310758&sr=8-1&keywords=ndio+airback NDIO stands for Never Dance In Orange. Edited by rushfan4 - November 01 2013 at 08:10 |

And a quote from a Cuneiform press release given to us by Jazz Rock specialist Dick Heath in this post from September 2005:
"NDIO *AirBack* &nb sp; file under: JAZZ/ JAZZ-ROCK/ FUSION [from THE NETHERLANDS] NDIO was formed from the ashes of the Holland-based Hugh Hopper Band, founded by British Canterbury icon and Soft Machine member Hugh Hopper in 1985. After the Hopper Band disbanded c. 2001, saxophonis and composer Frank van der Kooij, a key member from the start, asked Hopper to join a project under his leadership. Van der Kooij also invited two other Hopper Band alumni to join: British trombonist Robert Jarvis, and drummer Pieter Bast. Three other Dutch musicians rounded out the ensemble: guitarist Niels Brouwer and keyboardist Paul Maassen. On *Airback*, NDIO’s 1st CD release, the music is a fluid and “airy” fusion of jazz with elements of rock, folk, ambient, classical music and sampling. The Netherlands has recently been recognized as a seedbed for some of the best and most adventurous jazz in recent years. *Airback* shows that young Dutch musicians are also producing some of the world's best jazz/rock fusion - yet another musical development in which Hopper has played an integral role." The album is on bandcamp, but only the last track 'Wise men' has been enabled by Cuneiform Records for streaming purposes: http://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/album/airback It is also on YouTube: The first track off Airback 'Big Bombay' is on YouTube as performed live by another of Hugh's bands, BONE: But I couldn't find any other samples from this seemingly little-known band...who I agree belong on the site in JRF - as a separate entity - they can't really be listed with Hugh Hopper's other projects since saxophonist Frank van der Kooij was the driving force behind the ensemble. ![]() Edit: According to Frank van der Kooij's website: http://www.frankvanderkooij.nl/ under CDs and samples, page 3, there were two other NDIO releases: ![]() The plot thickens... ![]() Edited by yam yam - November 01 2013 at 11:06 |
