I can't believe Axis of Perdition and ot a lesser extent later Blut Aus Nord haven't been mentioned, as far as the most eruditely f**ked-up corner of black metal goes.

Dissonance is the sht. Well, you could start looking into RIO/Avant page, of course. Great bands in this thread too.
My all time favorite metal band, Voivod, is totally dissonant.
You should look for some post-punk underground like Pere Ubu (dadaist era).
Try The Locust, Daughters, Maruta, Portal, Pestilence (spheres album), Flourishing and Nightbringer for extreme music. The avant-black metal scene has a lot of dissonant hypnotic riffs too. Check some technical death metal too. The technical thrash band Myopia and Carbonized in the album Screaming Machines sounds like Voivod.
Oh, I almost forgot of Exploiting Dysfunction by Cephalic Carnage.
But my favorites are into Avant-Jazz, like John Zorn.

Other than the bands mentioned here, I think Anata also should be mentioned. They're a tech-death band which uses a pretty solid amount of dissonance and counterpoint in their work. The music isn't particularly accessible, so you may have to listen to it a few times to really get whats going on. They're progressive enough to be listed in the archives, although I wouldn't list that as their primary genre.
Gave them a listen today, and they're pretty awesome. Thanks!

When I think dissonance, the first thing that comes to my mind is still Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts. It was the first album I heard with dissonance and it blew my mind and expanded my idea of what music can be. Years after hearing it for the first time, it still strikes me as incredibly well done, not just for opening my mind but also on its own merits.
Good call. I love the dissonance in Lemmings and the crazy section of Lighthouse Keeper. Even "Man Erg" which starts out rather plaintive and consonant descends into very effective dissonance leading into that fantastic "I'm just a man and killers, angels, all are these. Dictators, saviours refugees" crashing ending...I'm gonna have to go listen to that album right now

Virus is good for this. As well as Kayo dot but personally I'd start with earliest maudlin of the well and go forwards in chronological order as Kayo dot can be a bit difficult
Mirthkon Emperor's album Prometheus definitely fits the bill (yea it's Prog) Dordeduh Tides of Man (for that mars Volta meets emo sound) Secret chiefs 3 Sleepytime gorilla museum
I recorded an album with the guy in behold the arctopus so there are a good number of bands he recorded that I checked out and these all fit the bill Time of orchids Zevious Dysrhythmia Indocrithine Krallice Check mick Barr and his output as well The flying luttenbachers
