Topic: Dream Theater through the years Posted: December 18 2013 at 03:09 |
Choose your favorite DT period, simple as that; if you find my classification wrong, just state yours and tell me your favorite years.
The Moore period is still my favorite. I dunno, And I think it's because of Kevin's work, amazing job he did there.

I'm really not a DT fanboy but the period I prefer is with Kevin Moore. The first album is, IMO near masterpiece. I don't really care for the other era of the band

'Jordan came' is Scenes From a Memory and the Octavarium epic. This one wins by a mile.

Tempted to go with 1999-2009 because it showcases their best 1-2 punch of albums ever (Metropolis and Six Degrees) but it also has some subpar stuff (SC and BC&SL). Leaves first and last for me; I think ADTOE is up there with their best albums but the newest one, while excellent, isn't as good as the first two. I've never personally been a huge fan of Awake but it's still an incredible album regardless. So Moore years, I guess.

The last option as some of my favourite DT albums are from different periods.

Each of these eras (excepting the Derek one) has both one of my favourite and one of my least favourite DT albums, so they're all pretty even to me.

I&W is by far my favourite DT album, so 89-94 it is!

It's rather close from the Moore years and the Rudess/Portnoy years for me, but I feel the quintesential Dream Theater sound comes from the Rudess/Portnoy line-up. To put it this way, I believe Rudess is a better fit with Dream Theater than Moore... but Moore complemented the Dream Theater sound better.

Images and Words is their best, but the 1999-2009 era has Metropolis, Six Degrees, Train of Thought, and Octavarium, all of which beat out the rest of the Kevin Moore years albums IMO.

Moore era. WDaDU, I&W and Awake are the albums I continue to listen to (the most).

I would classify their career otherwise.

Kevin Moore years for sure, they are the albums I reach for if I need to hear some DT. I also prefer Moore's solo work over most of the later DT material. OSI and Dead Air for Radios are incredible.
