Following on from the recent suggestion for Láquesis, we now take a look at another band from the same town of Rosario, who actually started out much earlier in 1995 - releasing their debut album 11 years ago back in 2002.

La Barca is a band of progressive and symphonic rock from the Argentina city of Rosario, formed in 1995, that by the end of March 2002 released their debut album, and in 2011 released their follow up.
Started as a group of friends who had been brought up from an early age with the music of Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Supertramp, Deep Purple, Genesis, Vox Dei and Aquellarre - they came together to make music - and evolved into a band with a progressive profile, having a solid foundation of bass and drums, a brilliant combination of guitars, voice and keyboards, ultimately becoming the band formed by musicians from other bands such as Sygma, Spirit, Pablo el Enterrador, Otoñal, Irreal, etc.
Equally important are the lyrics, which relate the everyday stories of the pain of marginalization, poverty and other social problems and humanitarian issues.

Their albums are:

S/T (2002)

1. Volar (3:22)
2. Magali (2:22)
3. Adonde vamos (5:06)
4. Desamparados (3:31)
5. Perduro en el Tiempo (4:02)
6. Genesis (4:54)
7. Te lo quiero decir (3:35)
8. Alquin dia to comprenderas (3:10)
9. Tercer milenio (2:56)
10. Caballo de Troya (4:11)
11. Te ando buscando (3:48)
12. Barajas de la vida (7:22)

Total Time 48:54

- Hugo García / guitar
- Rubén Rodríguez / bass and vocals
- Ronald Boettner / drums and percussion
- Pablo Gómez / keyboards
- José María Blanc / keyboards and vocals
- Marcelo Pistarino / guitars

Note: The live band in 2002 also included Guillermo Viola (keyboards and vocals) and Pablo Padín (from the Queen tribute band 'God Save The Queen') on keyboards.

Eclosion (2011)

1. La Oculta Memoria (4:13)
2. Veras (4:15)
3. Masacre (4:39)
4. Aqua (3:44)
5. Terezin (3:46)
6. Debemos Cambiar El Mundo (4:09)
7. Hombres De Negro (3:25)
8. No Te Detengas (5:06)
9. Desde El Cielo (4:46)
10. Cuando Ya Es Tarde (4:06)
11. Curar Coraz (3:48)

Total Time 46:03

- José Maria Blanc / vocals, keyboards and guitars
- Juan Carlos Louro / guitar and backing vocals
- Mario Ramos / rhythm guitars and backing vocals
- Rubén Rodríguez Goy / bass and vocals
- Jorge Urquilla / keyboards
- Ronald Alexander Boettner / drums and percussion

José Maria Blanc had formerly been a member of the wonderful Argentinian Symphonic Prog band Pablo "El Enterrado", being responsible for electric & acoustic guitar, bass & vocals in that band.

https://myspace.com/labarcars (7 full samples on the music page - five from the debut, and two from the follow up)
Their old website was at: http://orbita.starmedia.com/labarca1/, but it is sadly no longer functioning.  Cry

Two covers to start off:

And now their own material:

This next video was recorded on June 25, 2011, at the Theatre Circle of Rosario, Argentina, as part of the show: "Legends of the national rock" which also featured Vox Dei,  Alma y vida, & Pedro y Pablo:

This next one is La Barca Live: Rosario, Argentina - 15-04-2006 Pringles Square:

And a video from 2013: LA BARCA, Rosarina progressive rock band - first local band distinguished by the municipal council as a featured band of the city of Rosario.  JOSE MARIA BLANC / JUAN CARLOS LOURO / MARIO RAMOS / JORGE URQUILLA / DANIEL "PEPE" MOSCUEN / RONALD ALEXANDER BOETTNER / RAUL RODRIGUEZ (SAXO GUEST)

Cool

Edit: They played at the same two-day ProgreRock 2009 fesitival in Rosario (August, 29th and 30th) as Láquesis and the other distinguished Argentinian Symphonic Prog band who are already on the site, Pablo "El Enterrado"   Smile

I'll have crossover take a look at them, but they sound a bit more like prog-tinged hard rock than anything.

And the Crossover team agree...rejected with two straight 'no's: http://progfreak.com/La-Barca-158197.html?path=pa/recent.  I guess that shows just how little I really understand about these various sub genres, and indeed what actually constitutes prog in the first place. LOL

I have to vote NO for Symphonic.

I grew with this music, it's Melodic Argentinean Rock, not remotely Prog IMO

BTW; They were rejected by Symphonic many years ago and also by Prog Related

Thanks for posting back here Iván, and confirming what others have concluded regarding this band. I guess I need to enrol on a course at a local college or somewhere on 'how to identify prog'! LOL
