Everytime we watch "Funny Face" my wife complains that the girl (Audrey Hapburn) is too good for that "old fart" (Fred Astaire). Hard to disagree.

I'd go with Ginger Rogers. Like she said, she did everything Astaire did but backwards and in high heels.

Astaire; everything looks so simple when he does it, and he has the more original ideas. when he dances with a coat rack it appears to be alive! but Kelly is no doubt excellent too



this is the only time they ever appeared together. Kelly is the more athletic one, Astaire the more elegant one. keep in mind that Astaire is 13 years older than  Kelly; he is 47 in this video!

Both great, but Kelly was a major force with concept and choreography as well. Have to go with him.

This is the routine that always amazes me from Gene Kelly's co-star Donald O'Connor in Singing in the Rain. Funny and with incredible athleticism!

If it's athleticism you want then the act you want to see is The Nicholas Brothers.
 
Fred Astaire said that the "Jumpin' Jive" dance number in Stormy Weather was the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen.

Very impressive, never heard of the Nicholas Brothers before. I did fear for their crown jewels with those multiple splits they were doing at the end.
