I'll give a vote to Ikhnaton and Itsacon. I love that part.

Apocalypse in 9/8, the peak of the epic, followed close by Lover's leap.

It would be interesting what people would think if they had broken it up in to distinct tracks rather than calling it a single song. Would it be as loved?

^ Depends on the potential effort of the band. Some could make nice ballads, like the interlude between "Willow Farm" and "Apocalypse" could be a part of a short ballad.

I'm of the school of thought that the whole sounds rather patchy, and each one of those sections would find its own niche elsewhere.

I just see and hear it as one piece of music to be honest.  If pushed I'll go for Guaranteed....  Seen as it's not proving too popular Shocked.

Just to be different I'm not a massive fan of Apocalypse, I voted for the brilliant climatic ending.

Apocalypse in 9/8.

To quote a friend of mine, "perhaps the best 5 minutes of music ever recorded".

Apocalypse sounds pretty standard to my ears. Bit of filler from one melody to another
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Not at all, I believe. Unless, perhaps, they had been presented as different tracks but kept in the same order and without pause between one part and another (such as side 2 of Abbey Road with the Beatles) - which would be just about the same as it actually is. But if it had been broken into different "unrelated" songs (as they did with their "Duke" epic in the 80's), definitley not. Plus, for me, despite the fact that the sections are clearly identifiable and different, they flow perfectly together and make a whole that is much greater than the sum of the parts (and I may add that all of which are perfectly beautiful in their own).

Quoting The Bearded Bard friend, refering to Apocalypse in 9/8 "...perhaps the best 5 minutes of music ever recorded..." even for me, but it could be by this way just because it is part of this whole thing called Supper's ready, so as Dellinger said "...they flow perfectly together (the sections) and make a whole that is much greater than the sum of the parts..." perfect definition.

I don't get that. When you have all those wonderful melodies and the brilliant ending, it's basically Tony Banks running scales up and down the keyboard.

btw - the timings are wrong - 20:51 on my version is when Gabriel sings "our souls ignite".

I love the whole piece, but Apocalypse in 9/8 is just brilliant.
