I recently bought this album before I became a stuck up Prog Fanatic, and I was wondering if it's OKAY for me to listen to it.
[JOKE] I recently got this album from E-music (Programmed by the band Lethal), and find that I, personally, really like it. I was wondering if anybody else had heard this album, and if it could really be considered Prog. After all, Metal, no matter how "complicated", has always been on the "Less Prog" side of "Prog" to me. Here's the Listing for it on PA: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=27370 . I hear it's also extremely similar to early Queensryche in terms of vocals and even sound. Of course, with me, it can get a little tricky, because sometimes "Prog" can become a synonym for "dislike" in my mind, but in all honesty, what makes metal "Proggy" anyway? A focus on instrumental portions? An A-typical vocalist? Weird Time Signatures? Extremely demanding Rhythm Guitar lines? Fusing other genres of music with Metal? Long Songs? Concept? Bald band members? Anyway, as much as this is DEFINITELY MORE PROG than say, Quiet Riot, how Prog is Programmed, really? And what makes a Metal band, Progressive Metal, or just Heavy Metal? I guess a few of the above factors would be some things that makes a Prog Metal band different from a Heavy Metal band, but I suppose it just may not "seem" Prog to my ears if it doesn't have some sort of strange, say, dissonance, with perhaps a very odd drum line. However, this definition of Prog is incredibly tainted and comes simply from disliking music with those properties, and wishing to apply the "Prog" namesake to things I dislike (Just being honest here). I suppose it depends on your definition. But in as neutral of an opinion as can be expected, is Programmed Prog, and what exactly makes it so? With this album/group, however, it may be simply more "Prog-tainted" than actually full-fledged "Prog", but I'm curious to hear some insights anyhow. If anybody wants to hear some of it, I recommend Youtube (Search Results: HERE),although I could e-mail a few files for temp usage if wanted. Also, as if this is enough to tell, you can sample the album on E-Music (Approximately 30 seconds per song). So, please, feel free to comment on this, or simply the nature of Prog Metal. I know "Programmed" by Lethal and I think the music style falls under the semi-progressive US power metal tag, that bands like Queensr˙che, Savatage, Mystic Force, Heir Apparent, Titan Force, Crimson Glory, Mercury Rising (the first album) and others like that also share.
...personally I really appreciate this type of music |
