Topic: Nightwish still here? Posted: August 07 2005 at 15:11 |
Has anyone noticed how Nightwish are one of the least prog related bands ever yet they still have a place in the archives. What is going on? Queen, Steve Vai and Neutral Milk Hotel must look like prog giants comared to Nightwish!
Whoever requested them for PA must have thought "heavy use of keyboards and operatic style vocals... hey magma is a bit like that, ergo, Nightwish must be prog!"
I officially rate Nightwish's place on this website... AN ATROCITY TO MANKIND!!!

I agree, but bands like Rhapsody, Asia, Tool and so on are not one bit more prog.

Frenchie couldn't be more right.
BTW a thought that just occurred to me..
Just yesterday Nightwish performed in the opening ceremony of the athletics world champs. Must have been the first time A PROG METAL BAND performed in the worlds largest sporting event.

I never thought I'd see the day where Tool was lumped in with Rhapsody and Asia...

Kick`em out. I was on their concert (they`ve suppored Iron Maiden) and trust me it had NOTHING to do with prog . But Marco was drinking polish vodka on stage , no one can resist it

Well, I rather like NIGHTWISH, and their first two albums probably contain enough neoclassical and progressive elements to justify a place here (just about). But the later albums are definitely melodic power metal with a few progressive moves thrown in rather than progressive metal per se.

Nothing wrong with Nightwish being in the archives. Long may they reign

I don't get why people say Nightwish isn't prog. If you listen to their music:
There are influences from classical/baroque music
Their lyrics usually involve the supernatural
There is heavy influence on melody
The music is much more complex than that of bands like Styx and Queen, who are often considered prog
So why the fuss over them not being prog when they obviously are? Seriously, this band is the pure embodiment of progressive metal. I guess since they didn't come from the 70s and they don't have some name like "Zeus Starship Fantasy" then they're not good enough to be prog. You traditionalists need to realize that prog means "progressive," meaning it's always changing. There are only two or three other bands that play a style remotely similar to this, whereas everyone sounds like Queen these days.

One likes to believe in the freedom of music, for glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity.

while I personally have some sympathies with your point of view, I can't help noticing that you've deliberately dug up a thread which was 3 years old, and was better off being left buried...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

No need to resurrect this thread. The band was added by this sites founder,so whether you think they are prog enough or not to be here is irrelevant.
