Then you have not read "Caleb Williams" (1794) by Mary Shelley's father, William Godwin. A novel on social injustice and the power the rich can weild over the destitute.

From a societal perspective, both Frankenstein and Dracula have a greater appeal in pop-culture, but from a literary standpoint the allusive nature, themes and innovative (for the time) structure of Moby Dick is far more important, making it one the greatest American novels.
