I like both, but I'll choose Personal.
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

As long as the lyrics really say something, I don't care.  Or perhaps general with a personal touch or vice-verse.  Ying Yang
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I voted personal only 'cause asked a preference.  It doesn't mean there aren't great songs that are general though.  When I started thinking about personal, "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" came to mind and I couldn't think of any other.  That song was exactly where my head was at when I first heard it.  I've never forgotten that.

I don't want to listen to anyone's personal whining and whinging, least of all some pretentious rawk singer. What insight on anything could they possibly offer that would be anything other than some random words strung together to sound right when sung over a pretty melody better way no more, woh, woh, woh, woh, let me free no more.
What?

General, and I would think prog fans would generally feel that way. Actually, the best might be personal which leads into something universal. I feel like Hammill often does this, which is a big part of why he's one of my favorite lyricists.
