We've talked about this before, scroll through this thread for some ideas!
My favorite song in this genre is titled "Ulice Rozpaczy" by the Polish band "Panzerfaust," I used to have an MP3 link to the song but it no longer works. I'm not sure if they are Neo-Nazis or not, so apologies if they are! The music is brilliant!

My favorite band in this genre is "Gojira". This is french band from Bayonne, and they are great. "Gojira" plays very positive (sic!) progressive death metal.

Then it sorta snowballed from there into Opeth, Gorguts, Obscura, Beyond Creation, Augury, Blotted Science, Death, Atheist, etc. as well as other 'extreme but not death metal' bands like Orkenkjott, Means End (my avatar!), Intronaut, Cynic, Ihsahn etc.

One more progressive band in death metal: "Nile". All their albums are based on egyptian mythology, and music is brutal but very interesting.

IŽll add to the once mentioned above:
Sadist, Diskord, Pyrrhon, Ulcerate, Pestilence, After Oblivion (Death clone), Disharmonic Orchestra and a lot more I canŽt remember right now :-). While My Dying Bride is widely seen as a controversial addition to PA, they are also a very interesting band, if you enjoy doomy and at times progressive death metal. |

Something like the holy trinity:
Gorguts - Obscura Atheist - Unquestionable Presence Obliveon - From This Day Forward |
|
I've created an atmosphere where I'm friend first, boss second. Probably entertainer third.

Yes, Obliveon is a cool band with its own original style.

Mitochrondrion are worth a listen too, they're somewhat in a similar vein as Gorguts and company but with more of a black metal edge to them and a weird spacy feel to their entire aesthetic. Not sure if they're on the ProgArchives though.

Listened to "Brave Murder Day" by Katatonia yesterday and thought you might be interested in listening to that one too.

If you can find it, the album Elvenefris by Lykathea Aflame is very good. Brutal, progressive death metal with a spiritually uplifting lyrical theme. Probably one of the few brutal death metal albums that can be fully enjoyed by New Age hippies
Though I am far from that and I enjoy it also. Edited by Mascodagama - April 18 2014 at 08:08 |
