Topic: Making acoustic live covers of prog songs Posted: June 18 2014 at 11:28
Hi guys,
I'm not sure if it's ok to start a topic like this, but i wanted to share something i've been doing recently. Some of you may know band called iamthemorning that i sing in, and we're about to announce our second album release date. But while i have to keep everything a secret (which is a huge pain for me) i decided to keep myself busy by singing some of the songs that i love.
Mostly, this is going to be prog, so i though that PA might be a good place to share this.
So, we've started with Opeth's "Coil"
And then "Isolation years". Personally, i like this one more :)
I hope you'll like it. I love Opeth and i love their songs and i do realize that it may sound a bit cheesy - but i guess anything will sound cheesy if i sing it, even "heir apparent" :)
We'll keep making videos and i can post them here if anyone is interested.

I think it is a wonderful idea. Yes did an unplugged/acoustic version of "Roundabout" during their 35th Anniversary tour, it was very refreshing and the band had a wonderful time performing it! Or, so I thought at the time....

Actually, Yes did make a lot of songs into acoustic versions around the time, both in a concert DVD of sorts (because it had no audience), and as part of the set of the Songs of Tsongas DVD, plus a few studio ones on a compilation album. I actually liked the idea a lot, and most interesting is that they didn't cheas, as do most artists on their "MTV Unplugged", or just acoustic versions, in which they just change some electric parts for acoustic (but keep electric wherever they deem necessary) and/or add lots of other instruments to fill the sound. Yet, they played them with only the 5 of them and entirely acoustic, which I guess in the end requires some talent. Which way of doing acoustic gives the best result in the end, I'm not sure, but Yes's way of doing it gave us some beautiful versions anyway, though I feel they could have chosen some other songs for the format that would have worked wonderfully (I would love to have heard "To Be Over" worked this way).
As for Iamthemorning, I'm afraid I don't yet know you guys very much, but I just ordered my copy of the first album, so I hope to be get to listen to it soon (well, I live in Mexico, and I ordered it to be received in the USA, so I'll need someone to bring it here). Still, I expect to get some really beautiful music there.

Thank you all for the repsonse, this is so inspiring <3
This one is not that progressive, but you know, everyone loves Anneke. As stated in the video description - i do realize that there is such a long way for me to go and so much to learn to be good enough to sing her songs but i love this one and wanted to give it a try.

Fish did an acoustic tour some years ago and it was an awesome show, even if he has lost some heights in his voice now caused by the two operations on his vocal chords in 2008 and 2009 (and probably one or two drinks too much ;) )
