Scenes is better as a whole cohesive work, but I&W has better overall songs. The latter's production is interesting too - it almost sounds electronic and "plastic"-y, which gives it a different atmosphere to my ears

Images and Words for me; both are the corner stones of the genre, though.

I like them equally. My choice alternates every now and then.

They both have precisely the same rating here on PA! I prefer Metropolis as I enjoy the concept and it's more experimental.

Images by miles. I only like Kevin Moore albums. Out of later albums, maybe Change of Seasons, Octavium or Train of Thought are worth anything: 3 or 3,5 stars at most. Their albums Metropolis Part 2 Scenes From A Memory, Live Scenes and Six Degrees are the most ridiculous and overrated progresive metal albums I have ever heard, especially Scenes from a memory, which is a piXX on the sublime Metropolis Part 1, and even on the original Part 2 released on Falling Into Infinity Demos.

Images is a lot more compact and doesn't overstay its welcome (for me). And only one or two songs of sickeningly syrupy elevator music-meets-metal (Another Day, parts of Surrounded) which would dominate the subsequent albums more and more. Basically, I am not very much fond of LaBrie and I&W seems to be organised such that he doesn't stand out quite so much and the focus is more on Petrucci and Moore, which is just the way I like it.

I&W was a shock wave in the rock music community and if only because of that deserves recognition, and the second half of the album is truly outstanding, but IMHO Metropolis Pt II was their maturity release and overall still their best to date. I love the 2nd disc of Six Degrees but the 1st disc does not make it a perfect album for me.
