Great aren't they ! ! ! Of all the "newer" Prog bands in existence, I think this particular group has been able to capture the sound of authentic 1970's Prog...yet with their own unique style... leave it to those wonderful Italians to continue to produce amazing music. |

If you go to Progressive Ears forum you'll see Steve Feigenbaum mention their progress in several threads.
Here's what he last said:
"I got what APPEARS to be a final, working, finished DVD master last week. Of course, it needs to be checked, but I am assuming it is ok.
I've had the CD master for months. SO, I hope it's a go for September 2008 - they blew the deadlines for January and May. Still waiting on the texts, but that's a relatively small thing. Here's what it is: DEUS EX MACHINA-Imparis (new studio CD + live DVD : the studio CD is 55' and contains 45' of new material and 1 older song revisted - the dvd contains 60 minutes of a 2006 concert in Paris professionally shot and edited and looking pretty damn sw**k + extras: interviews + Paris backstage + Fabrizio plays solo piano + excerpts from Manresa [Spain 2002] + excerpts from Chapel Hill [USA 1996] + excerpts from italian TV [1996] + an amazingly ridiculous music video that the band did in 1993 that may have you asking for your money back (sorry, no can do!): total time of DVD is about 2 hours) btw - Imparis is Latin for "odd" " |

Well, I love the band, though I haven't pulled out any albums in a while (hmm, maybe I'll do that when I get home). Love the vocals most of all, but all of them are insanely good musicians (especially the rhythm section).
They were the reason I found out about Nearfest back in 2001. Couldn't believe they were playing in the states, let alone 2 hours from my house! I must say though, that I was pretty disappointed with their performance. I think a lot of it was a poor mix and generally poor sound. Not entirely their fault of course, and for their music that can certainly ruin the performance. But I wouldn't say it was bad, just not as good as I'd hoped. In any case, still a great band and I love their albums. This thread reminded me that I still have never picked up Cinque! Gotta get on that right away.................. |

I had the good fortune of seeing Deus Ex Machina @ NEAR Fest in 2001, brilliant musicians, great writing and playing, thoroughly dug it even though I can't understand a word of Latin. This si some very cool avant-fusion, sort of like a mutation of Area if you will but more accessible (relatively speaking).

People are puzzled why I don't dig the Stones, well, I listened to the Stones, I tried, and I tried, and I tried, and--I Can't Get No Satisfaction!

Okay, this is an old thread but I don't care... I have to say DEM kicks my butt twice. Claudio Trotta is a monster drummer and Piras is my favorite prog vocalist of late. This is the preimier Italiano Formagio Progresso! I never cared for Banco, PFM, Grupo Sportivo, etc... but I love these guys!

Very different, creative and challenging band! DEM are certainly not for most prog initiates, or the faint of heart -- see my (& Maani's) reviews. http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1698 Edited by Peter |

I guess you'd prefer it if I didn't recommend any Faust to you. I have a
feeling you'd really hate that! |

Without a shadow of doubt the WORST band i have ever seen live and unfortunatley I have seen them at two festivals, I believe them to be wholly unlistenable, something between a drill being pluinged into a metal sink and a metal trash can of marbles falling down a hill...am at a loss as to why anyone let alone likes them, but can listen to them. By the way, I love Zappa, Slayer, early Metallica, Yes are my fave band, Dreamtheater... so it is not a noise issue, more a type of noise issue. |

I've downloaded the two Deus Ex Machina tracks on this site and they're the
freshest thing I've heard from any of the new proggers (I'm a long-tooth progger!). Love the angularity and the humour - which is why I love Zappa and Faust. Don't know much more about them, however. |
