I like both very much thus won't vote, however if it was Jeff Beck that would be a different story.

I think this thread wins the highly coveted "Thread with the Most Puns" award.

Define "better" then we may get some responses worthy of a read. This is the sort of question a 7 year old might ask...
Technical facility?
Creativity?
The only things I can really contribute is wonder which of these otherwise two superb instrumentalists is which is the worse singer? (I'm not a fan of either's vocal, love the writing and performing).
Wouldn't it be nice if Hackett joined Asia... with Wetton on vocals...

no I would rather Howe rejoined and Hackett carried on as a solo artist. Wolflight is testament to that

I didn't check any of their solo albums, but for their work in their bands (Genesis and Yes), I believe Howe are better.
Anyway, my opinion

Not all, but have you guys noticed that most guitarists (many anyway) are called Steve?

I give PA member's credit for understanding what makes a better guitarist without having to draw pictures. Why don't you?

I read a rumor that Howe and Hackett are friends again and a GTR reunion is a future possibility.
Could have been an April Fools joke.

At the heart of Hackett's playing there is often a romantic melodicism. I find Howe's playing to be technically brilliant but it doesn't touch me emotionally in the same way as Hackett. I vote for Hackett.

Huge YES fan voting Hackett. He's the best player in Genesis imo. Pretty good solo career too. Peter Gabriel might still have been the bigger driving force of early Genesis, but when Hackett left the sailboat just capsized. Coincidence? Possibly maybe. He's still the man. Howe is great but I didn't like his solo stuff I've heard. I also wish he experimented a bit more with his tone, but no doubt the man has crazy chops.

That's an understatement ---they are both okay as backup singers but that's about it---I have always believed that Hackett's solo career could have been over the top amazing had he had a good singer selling those songs. His voice is too one dimensional to sing lead.

Oh yeah, I'm a lucky man here, Hackett's solo career has always been over the top amazing with or without its irrelevant good singing. If for others it's relevant, I'm lucky again to like and enjoy several songs of him, he sings well Serpentine Song, Last Train To Istanbul, Waters Of The Wild, Icarus Ascending, India Rubber Man, Looking For Fantasy, among many others. Genesis gave no space - or far, very far from what he deserved - for such a greatly talented eclectic composer like Steve Hackett, Fortunately he didn't waste much time there (only a few years.) And what a great news he continues composing!

This could be true, besides this, most vocalists can't sing either And almost none of all vocalists can play as good.
