Topic: On This Day in Prog Posted: August 16 2014 at 08:12 |
i like to start a new topic (if there wasn't one like this already) on discussions of what happened on this day in prog like the title says. so ill go ahead and start with an "important" moment:
it was on this day in 1975 that Peter Gabriel announced he was leaving Genesis after the conclusion of the tour supporting The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The band would eventually take the drummer Phil Collins as the lead singer after over 400 auditions (so to speak) to find a new vocalist for the next 18 months.

It was on this day (Friday Aug. 16/74, at the tender age of 16) that I was sitting by the pool in my folks backyard, watching the fluffy clouds slowly float by while I listened to my new Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans album, that I announced to my friends that I had scored a wee bag of trendy chemical amusement aid. We would all eventually get baked in the sun and spend the day listening to our favourite prog artists. At least I sort of remember it that way, it was a long time ago and things are still a little fuzzy from back then.

Funny you should mention that. As I posted recently:
I first heard this album on late night FM radio around Christmas 1974. This was my first exposure to Genesis
as they were mostly unknown in the Dallas area. Their US fan base
seemed to be exclusively in the Northeast then. While parts of it
sounded kind of strange, overall I was impressed. Fast forward several
months and I hear on the same FM radio station that Peter Gabriel had
left Genesis. I remember well the DJ's comment at the end of the press announcement: "Well, that looks like the end of Genesis." Thankfully, it did not turn out that way. But that's another story.

On September 2, 1977, I saw Yes in concert with Donovan opening, "Going For The One" tour, at the late/great Chicago Amphitheater.
