I'm biased towards Talk Talk. Loved them from the beginning, and through all their evolution.
While I enjoy OK Computer, I just don't have much of a relationship with it, if that makes sense. It just doesn't quite speak to me, ... |
That part. Plus, I feel OK Computer sounds like it's all over the place, especially "Paranoid Android" (where the ideas don't quite jell and there is no breathing room).

Radiohead, OK Computer.

I dig individual tunes off of Radiohead albums - stuff like The Pyramid Song, Paranoid Android and the more experimental bits from Hail to the Thief. When faced with a full album I flee.
Talk Talk on the other hand makes me a happy bunny. |
My thoughts entirely .

OK Computer. Thom Yorke channels emotions on this album that I never heard any other singer get at. I can't even properly articulate it, the emotion he's expressing in his voice. Utterly original, though.
I do love Talk Talk though. But I didn't live and breathe it, like I did Radiohead for several years.
Interesting to contrast the two: Radiohead had an immediate impact, while Talk Talk didn't really get "discovered" till well after they were over. Their influence was felt on the next generation, particularly the orchestral production style, which was picked up and popularized by the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Grandaddy and a few others. The popularity of these acts - plus the fact that they namechecked Talk Talk as a big influence - was what brought the world's attention to this ignored & long forgotten-about band. Radiohead too was clearly influenced by Talk Talk.

OK Computer. If this were Spirit of Eden or Laughing Stock, then I'd probably vote differently.

I .... (although truth be told: it wasn't until much
later these fruitful years of Talk Talk got the praise they
deserved).... . | I remember this very well. The prevailing
opinion when "Spirit of Eden" came out was "what the hell are they
thinking?" Even I was a little taken aback on first listen. And then
when "Laughing Stock" came out, it seemed like they were ironically
embracing their "fall from grace" with a proud display of iconoclasm. For me, what they were doing dovetailed nicely with my appreciation for prog, although no one considered them prog at the time. I forget where and when I first heard the term "post-rock", but it was much, much later on, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Talk Talk acknowledged as one of the "pioneers" of this style.
|
I think their "fame" started, or at the very least acknowledgement came about with the rise of post-rock too - especially the sticker. Back when people started using the internet to hunt down music and compare notes. I was a wee teen at the time, so I can't remember any of it though.
