Topic: David Gilmour Solo Albums Posted: August 31 2014 at 15:54 |
Simple enough, which solo album do you prefer? Personally, I really like the change of pace offered in About Face, which includes what I think is the best post-Final Cut song from any Floyd member, "Murder".

I like About Face the best. All three are distinct from one another.

I like About Face and On an Island equally. But my vote goes to About Face because it stands out in the context of 1984, one of the poorest prog years.

Difficult between About Face and On An Island. On the whole, I think On An Island is a more succesful and coherent album (even more so the live versions), and the title song is really wonderful. But for me, About Face has some stronger songs, mainly Murder; though, I'm afraid the live versions from this album were also much better than the studio ones, and unfortunatley not officially available.

I always want to like Gilmour's stuff more than I do, he's such a brilliant player. I'd have to say for me the most overall pleasing one is the first. True his later releases were more developed, better produced and less stuck in the guitar-rock past, but I can't honestly say I wholly enjoy About Face or the last one.

I can't believe I'm reading so many compliments about the `About Face' album! Sure, `Murder' is a good track on it (I'd be brave enough to say the ONLY good track on it), but are people thinking of just one piece, or the whole album, which is mostly bland overproduced AOR dreck if I recall? I haven't spun it in about 15-20 years, but I disliked it at the time because it sounded nothing like Floyd. While I'm probably way overdue to give it a new listen, I really doubt I'll find it to be an undiscovered jewel! My vote would easily go for `On An Island' as well, but his 70's album was good too for what it was. Tom, remember I told you that Hippy Haven place in Belgrave was trying to get something over $40 (or was it $60?!) for their LP of `About Face', just because of the Pink Floyd connection?! I'd say it would be the worlds largest frisbee...and most expensive too!

I'll go with On An Island too, I was quite hesitant of getting it at first but I was so glad I did, I really think it's an excellent album. Never heard About Face before and the S/T one is also very good IMO.

Yeah - I think you said something like 40 bucks !!! I haven't heard AF for longer than you, but I recall a few decent tunes - You May Be Right was pretty sweet, Murder (if for the beautiful Fretless Bass solo from Pino), Out Of The Blue......yeah, I must dig this old Bali cassette out (nothing that screams to be owned on vinyl...)

Totally agree. "Murder" is the only track I'm interested in hearing from About Face. Everything else is subpar, imo. I'd love to hear what Waters would've done with "Murder," blowing it up to a 10 to 20 minute track is my dream...
I went with On an Island, but I love his self-titled album as well. While it's true that About Face is over-produced, I think "David Gilmour" is under-produced (esp. for the year, '78 was it?), and could have used more tonal colors (Rick Wright's keys, a bit of sax). Still, a nice under-the-radar album.
