It's a bit of a trick question; I'd say I prefer Genesis' music generally over Gabriel solo. But as for Gabriel as an individual artist/singer, I would say I prefer his solo work.
isn't that part of the definition of a "solo artist?"

I didn't particularly care for Gabriel's Genesis in high school, but I was blown away by his first solo album; conversely, Trick of the Tail was the first Genesis album I loved (and the tour was the first time I saw the band live).

Good question. I would pick Genesis because of the epic songs i.e. Carpet Crawlers, Supper's Ready, Cuckoo Cocoon among so many more epic songs inc. my ultimate favorite Genesis Gabriel era, The Knife. Usually I vote for a band instead of a solo artist, instrumentally seems more fulfilling to me.
I keep changing my mind here, because Gabriel as a solo artist has produced so much amazing work too! From Biko to Red Rain, Mersey Street and another fav of mine Solsbury Hill among many others

While I dig Gabriel’s solo effort, I don’t think it’s in the
same league as the Genesis material. You just can’t compare anything done by Peter
Gabriel outside of Genesis to the likes of say Foxtrot.
Of course I am talking about entire musical compositions and
not just certain elements such as his voice.Even still, when I first listened to Supper’s Ready, towards the end
when Gabriel bellowed out “Jerusalem”, it sent chills up my spine.Nothing off his solo works ever did that.

IMO, his voice has improved over the years....the grittyness of his vocals over the orchestra in his most recent work really shows how his voice shines. I think the early Genesis albums were very poorly produced - all the instruments congeal together and muffle everything. I'd never truely heard Hackett in the mix until recent CD remasters. Gabriel also tried to squeeze as many words into that murky mix as possible, sometimes to the detriment of the music (Epping Forest, a large chunk of the Lamb). His more recent efforts are much better than the first two solo albums....though I dig those records, there seems to be a reaching for pop success that drags some cuts down, especially on the "hard rock" second album.
I had to vote solo but with a caveat....solo including and after "Melt".
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....
Yes the remasters have clarified those earlier releases - they have better thechnology and fincial backing to allow these recordings to be heard how they were intended. This might not sit well with those who worship the original sound but there we are. I prefer the new versions and the old ones are still around for those who prefer those.
Have to really go with Genesis Gabriel here; largely because it is Genesis not Gabriel's Angels. Rutherford, Banks and Hackett had such a writing impact that enhances his merits with Genesis so considerably.
One thing I find a little funny: had this poll been posted anywhere else on the net (disregarding prog sites of course), Gabriel solo would've won in a landslide. Heck, most people I introduce early Genesis to had absolutely no idea Gabriel was involved with the band. 'What?!?!?! I thought Genesis was an 80s band - y'know Land of Confusion'
