I actually like all of these albums quite a bit, but haven't had the same degree of success as others with them.
Yes - Tales (It goes on and on...) Genesis - Selling (Pretty solid prog album, not much more) Tull - Brick? (Actually like this one a lot, but #2 prog album of all time is a stretch) ELP - Tarkus (Does the least for me of all the early ELP) Floyd - Wish (Could never get into Shine On) Crimson - Court (Not the best album of all time IMO, sorry)

Yes - GFTO (I can never finish this thing...maybe it's the buttocks)Genesis - SEBTP (A couple of great tunes, but some I can't get into at all) Tull - TAAB (1st side is ace but halfway through side 2 I'm ready for something else) ELP - BBS (I actually only really dig KE9 1st impression, both parts) Floyd - Animals (Would've liked some Gilmour vocals on side 2, and P3DO should've been shorter) Crimson - Lizard (I only love the opening track...not much the rest really)

"Overrated" meaning (to me) that everyone else rates it highly but I've never really liked it much:
Yes: The Yes Album Genesis: Foxtrot King Crimson: Lark's Tongue in Aspic Emerson Lake and Palmer: Trilogy Jethro Tull: Thick as a Brick Pink Floyd: Meddle

Rush!! Oh, Rush... Camera Eye's so 80's (and not the good kind... Stop it with these 'cameras', please.) In A Farewell To Kings, Madrigal's my favorite song. It's something different, while Cinderella Man I can't stand. I've tried to like Hemispheres SO much. I like La Villa, but the praise it gets is too much. Permanent Waves, Jacob's Ladder rubs me everywhere wrong. Though, 2112 rubs me right. I think all the songs are great.
Now, my feelings on King Crimson's In the Court: I think Moonchild spoils the meal. I Talk to the Wind is utterly beautiful, 21st Century is schizophrenic, Epitaph is an epic poem (listen to Peter Sinfield read it aloud on youtube!), and the title track is magnificent. Though overall, especially Moonchild being the longest song, I can never bring myself to listen to the album all the way through.

I dislike this type of thread. So I won't buy into it and hope it just dies.

Yes: Relayer. A mess, for the most part. They are heavily overrated in general. Genesis: None. Was going to say Foxtrot but it's near impossible to overrate an album with Supper's Ready on it. King Crimson: Starless and Bible Black, somewhat Emerson Lake and Palmer: None, they are slightly underrated overall. Jethro Tull: Songs from the Wood, I agree. TAAB also, but it's pretty good. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, but they are almost uniformly overrated.

To keep it simple, anything with a rating over 4,154 in overrated. anything with a rating under 2,687 is underrated. Any rating between 2,688 and 4,153 is a perfect match. Because in the end its a matter of taste.

Yes: Fragile - Great album, but a bit overrated.
Genesis: A Trick of the Tail or Wind & Wuthering - Both great albums as well, but people make them seem better than they are really.
King Crimson: Islands - Easily.
ELP - Tarkus - I guess? I adore the first album so...
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - I'd say Piper, but it's not really prog. WYWH is still solid though.
Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Most UNDERRATED from the big six.
Yes: Tormato (Here on PA this is rated lower than Fly From Here, Drama, Talk, Magnification and The Ladder... Seriously?!)
Genesis: Duke
King Crimson: In The Wake Of Poseidon
Emerson Lake and Palmer: Trilogy
Jethro Tull: Heavy Horses
Pink Floyd: A Momentary Lapse of Reason
|
I would agree with half of these....

Bit generalised this response, I suppose - but pretty much gets to the heart of what everyone else is saying:
Anything that is highly rated that I'm not too keen on personally.
I guess nearly all prog metal albums fit into this category for me - especially those recorded by Dream Theater.

I never really liked Rush and they have very high ratings here. Does that make it overrated? If so: Yes - Tales KC - Discipline Genesis - The Lamb ELP in general Pink Floyd - Meddle

That makes two of us. The situation with Tormato is especially ironic, knowing that in the 1980s Yes was irreversibly infested by a small, but annoying swarm of synthpop buffoons:)
And AMLOR is a highly enjoyable collection of quality music that's good for your mind and soul likewise, unlike the gloom and monotony of The Wall or the cutesy nonsense of the Barrett-era creations.
What a wonderful place to vent :) Looking at the Progarchives' Top 10: I'd only leave 2 - the DSOTM and the Red (which is to say that I consider the remaining 8 either "overrated", or outright weak). In case anyone is interested, here are the records that I'd list in the Top 10: Viljans Öga, Scherezade, Fish Out of Water, Snow Goose, Fragile and FOABP.
