SOMA is an original band from Toronto that plays a unique brand of music dubbed as "progressive funk". It features some of the hardest hitting young musicians in the Canadian music scene creating catchy hooks and intricate harmonies over nasty grooves. Nevin Dunn - Sax Andrew Kesler - Keys/Guitar Keith Doiron - Bass Claudio Santaluce - Drums Edited by Symphonicrockfran - October 13 2014 at 14:09 |

Very, very nice indeed!!
"SOMA is an instrumental group that blends neo-soul, jazz, rock and funk to create a rich texture resulting in strong grooves and melodies. SOMA was formed from a series of jam-sessions in Spring of 2010. SOMA delivers a fresh and exciting funk-soul sound that appeals to the dance and jazz-crowds alike.
Artists we also like Soulive, Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, Void, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Jamiroquai." http://www.thedailyplanet.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8053:toronto-based-band-soma-to-release-new-album&catid=51:music&Itemid=238 (Written by Emma Brown Thursday, 16 February 2012): Members of SOMA from left: Keith Doiron, Nevin Dunn, Claudio Santaluce, and Andrew Kesler. Humber music grad Nevin Dunn has just finished recording his first full-length album, due out this spring, with his band SOMA. “We were focused on creating a collection of really diverse and catchy songs,” said Dunn, who plays tenor saxophone. “We wanted songs that we’d be excited to listen to, both as music lovers and musicians,” he added. Dunn, who formed the band with fellow Humber students Andrew Kesler (keyboards), Claudio Santaluce (drums), and Keith Doiron (bass guitar), more than two years ago, describes the band’s sound as eclectic. “I would say that our music fuses jazz, soul, and funk,” Dunn told thedailyplanet.com. “But people will definitely hear a dance music influence on some of the new songs.” Toronto singer-songwriter La-Nai Gabriel has recorded and performed with Dunn on several occasions and has been a fan of SOMA’s music since the band started. “I really dig their music,” Gabriel told thedailypanet.com. “They play soulful, meaningful music with the complexity of jazz and the hard groove of funk. They are really talented musicians with a lot of heart.” Fellow musician Matt Giffin has known Dunn for more than 10 years, he said that Dunn’s unique style of interpreting music gives SOMA a definite edge over a lot of other bands out there. “Nevin is a unique player,” Giffin told thedailyplanet.com. “Where most sax players these days have a really architectural approach using patterns and shapes to construct solos, he looks to the human voice for inspiration.” One for JMA at the very least!! |

This was OK, wasn't feeling a high prog quotient though.

^ No, probably not - but I'm glad I was introduced to these guys on here. Certainly needs to go into JazzMusicArchives somewhere if anyone from that site happens to pass by.
