I know - I know, an obligatory contract satifyer of an album that should've never been unleashed onto an unwitting public. But it was, and it could have been a whole lot worse (at least Lake's voice hadn't changed yet). Come on all you outright and closet fans! What's your favorite song?

^You forgot to include 'Letters From The Front', an instrumental piece featuring some experimental, 'Canario' gets my vote.
Besides Canario the only other music that I found some interest was that kind of a "march" melody at the final part of 'Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman', I guess at the minute 17'. This excerpt also clearly shows the strong inspiration in the classical music that ELP often got from.

For You then Memoirs... and Canario. IMO Lakes voice was never better than on this album. For You is perfect prog pop as typified by Asia a few years later.

For You is a respectable song that deserves some appreciation.
Memoirs will get a lot of votes but it lacks real depth for a long track and the transition bit in Letters From The Front is very clumsy and unconvincing. Canario doesn't sound good to my ears . I especially dislike the guitar sound that Lake uses on that track. All I Want Is You and and Love Beach could have made decent radio hits if they had the Trevor Horn production like Yes had with Owner of Lonely Heart. The Gambler is a fun track and I like certain things about it so would probably vote for that second. Taste Of My Love is pure crap.

The only song I know from the album is Canario, which I consider the most ugly ELP track I ever heard. For this, and the bad reviews of the album, I have no tendency to explore the album any further.

This matches my view. Memoirs is clearly a carefully composed piece, but most of it is quite dull.

Sorry if this causes another chair falling episode JD but...Love Beach. It's actually quite catchy and I really like the jangly early-Beatles guitar, plus it features some great drumming from Carl Palmer and would have been a better shot at a hit single than All I Want Is You. It would sound quite at home on the soundtrack of Baywatch, and what greater testament can there be to its musical quality than that?

Exactly this !!! LB isn't a total dog of an album. Lake's vocals are quite superb throughout, and Palmer's drumming is outstanding.

Lake's voice was indeed very strong on this album. I suspect this is where a lot of the conspiracy theories came from about Lake pulling the band into a more commercial direction. In reality all the band were keen to try this but it was only Lake that could cope with it. On the subject of Asia it would have been interesting if the line up with Lake would have stuck. Obviously it didn't but Lake did write a couple of songs with Downes one of which 'Money Talks' became the working version of 'Paper Blood' for the Black Moon album some years later.

......Sure, Love Beach offered a more commercial approach, yes, and it doesn't compare to Brain Salad or Tarkus, but given the time-frame, it kind of fits in with the 'Works' period nicely, and most of my buddies agree that despite the overtly 'Pop' direction, the album is relatively fine........
........no 'meisterwerk', but pretty decent for the era.....
..........(and many know that I am 'pro' this album....)

yep its not that bad and Palmer still played with a relative freedom before he got worried by all the silly music critics who were anti-prog and then turned himself into a very ordinary AOR style drummer ( like we needed yet another .. yawn)

From what I remember reading back in the day, both ELP's Love Beach and Yes' Tormato (each from 1978) could be filed under the "contractual obligation" department.
