First brought to my attention by new user Free as an Hydra, Dhafer Youssef is a Tunisian born musician who at a young age fell in love with jazz. By 1990 he had decided to go to Europe to pursue a career in that genre, and he has since made some wonderful music by mixing Qawwali - the meditation music of Sufi mystics - into jazz, and from there often adding in rock and even at times electronic influences. He also has avant garde leanings at times. Over his now robust career, he has released ten full length albums, and worked with fellow greats such as Paolo Fresu, Eivind Aarset, Bugge Wesseltoft, and Markus Stockhausen, to name a few.

Wow, this is great music!!! Thanks for sharingThumbs Up Definitely be looking out for his records.

It's not what I'd call fusion though (maybe a fusion between jazz and Tunisian music with a bit of electronic and avant thrown into the mix), and regardless of much I'm digging the music, I still don't think it fits in under any of our monikers.
You made me a fan thoughBeer

I hear rock tendencies here and there, and a lot of the people he's worked with over the years are big fusion guys who are on these Archives. Had to give it a shot.

And glad to just share the music.Beer

Hey it's just an opinionWink
I'm not on the jazz rock/fusion team, so they might hear things differently.

It's definitely similar to some fusion but overall Youssef's music and career seem closer to world music than our JR/F genre here on PA, in my opinion.

Well, I would give him a Thumbs up for the JR/F genre, because the albums "Electric Sufi" and "Divine Shadow" have some prog/fusion vibe. But the other albums not, that's true, but that would be no problem for me at least, because PA has lot of stuff which is not prog but from an artist who has at least one prog album.

Birds Requiem has more rock in it + Jazz + prog . Amazing work and I think it should be included in PA.
Start the chaos and take the best order you can discover in it.

I removed the other thread, please don't open new ones in the future if there is already an existing thread. Also like I said before, even after listening to the new album I don't think he fits in our Jazz Rock / Fusion genre here.

While I really like Dhafer Youssef (saw him twice in concert and have two of his album and heard two more) I don't really think he has his space in PA

Because in that case, Ibrahim Maalouf would definitely deserve one too.... and while we're at it, Tigran Hamassyan as well

Those three's paths cross at regiular intervals, but none of them have the least amount of rock spirit (though Maalouf's Illusions does, but it's one of a kind)

Hey Sean

I have so far been to three Dhafer youssef concerts and in the latest one , there was even a "Metal" music short jam.

I could agree with your perspective , but then "Rabih Abou-Khalil" is on PA.

I knew you'd say that!!!Angry LOL

That (RAK inclusion) was pushed heavily by our Baldies collabs, but TBH, I wasn't for his inclusion  it all.

And unfortunately, it's difficult to be undone...

and we also choose to avoid the thinking of if X & Y are in, so should Z not be in??

if you enjoy Dahfer, he had Armenian Tigran Hamasyan playing on piano with him

Tigran Hamasian's Mockroot album is tremendous, but hear him in concert:
