Hi I recently discovered a lot of awesome progressive rock concept albums like the wall duh hahaha as well as scenes from a memory part 2. Do any of you know albums with a similar feel to these concept albums of above mentioned albums or even some other awesome prog related albums ? Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Pain of Salvation is a band that comes to mind, most of their albums are concept albums. Their debut 'Entropia' is my personal favorite, if you like funk-y bass you may enjoy it. Their other albums are very different though, so don't expect the same thing on each one.

Rush's 'Clockwork Angels' is another awesome concept album.

Hope these recommendations help. Smile

You should listen to Steven Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase. Big smile
Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?

Hi,

The idea of "concept albums", is not new, and it isn't old, either. It just ... is ... as I like to say, however, for rock music, specially, too many of these concepts are rather hazy and not always clear, and sometimes, over rated and not a concept album at all ... just an idea for putting together an x number of songs, and all of those songs were in my "litter box'. So to speak.

Compositionally, there are a lot of things that would fit that description, but even then, you and I can sit here and compare to an Opera or another concept that is more "complete" as an idea, then you will find a lot of these rock eccentricities a bit over rated and full of it.

For me, the worst excuse is ... them lyrics ... that supposedly tell you a story that you are going to follow and accept as a "concept", even though, in the end, if you try to connect the dots ... they don't come together at all! This "illusion", is very bad, and it is a deceitful situation, that makes you think there is more there than otherwise ... but if you compare it to literature and other proper definitions of the term, the connections are very weak and poor, and that should close the book on the situation.

But for some reason, rock folks think that top ten is more important than the history of the arts ... good luck! All it is doing is showing how bad the rock music can be and how poorly designed and repetitive it is. And to be progressive, it needs to be wayyyyy better than that!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Getting back to the question, here's some prog concept albums I would recommend, not necessarily similar to DT though.

Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Spocks Beard - Snow
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
IQ - Subterranea
Rush - 2112 (which is only half a concept album but there you go)

the "Robot Woman" trilogy by Mother Gong, also their album "Fairy Tales"
Nik Turner's "Xitintoday"
Peter Haimmill's "The Fall of the House of Usher"
"Marscape" by Jack Lancaster and Robin Lumley.
"Rockpommels Land" by Grobschnitt
"Spartacus" by Triumvirat.
"Recycled" by Nektar (in my opinion much better than "Remember the Future", of which I dislike the weak chorus singing the album title. "Re-meeeem-ber the fuuuuu-ture". Yikes!

Vast question.

If you enjoyed The Wall and Scenes from a Memory Part 2, you can try Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime.
