Austaras was formed in autumn 2008 and first performed live in late 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. Following a four-year break since 2011’s Under the Abysmal Light EP, Prisoner of Sunlight showcases a massive musical evolution. Blending the band’s atmospheric black metal roots with elements of jazz fusion, post-rock ambience, and classic synth-laden progressive rock, the album is loosely based around an original mythical concept, following the journey of an outcast soul to the inhospitable ends of the earth. 
Brutal directness and groovy syncopation coexist alongside melodic guitar harmonies, massive choruses, and sweeping analog synth tone. In addition, Prisoner of Sunlight features drummer Adam Hansen handling the majority of the lead vocal duties alongside guitarist John Becker- their natural, soaring cleans adding an understated edge to the epic, layered arrangements.
