you found a good site... we have plenty of fans of all that popular English sh*t... but more importantly there is a significant number here that are interested in exploring past the same old same old and finding the real gems outside the English world.
I wouldn't call them famous... though Echoyln (for some reason that escapes me for I think they are boring as hell personally) have a significant fan base. Gerard had an champion in the early formative days of the site (Erik for the old school members... god I wonder what he is up to) that turned on a great many people that didn't know of them, myself included. Get the Live in Marseille album from them.. fricking incredible album.

The Ske album, Mille Autunni, is actually quite nice and melodic, and not scary at all. Another Avant band that usually encounters the favour of more 'traditional' prog fans is Miriodor (Avanti! is one of the top 10 albums of the past 15 years, in my humble opinion). Anyway, if you want to expand your horizons with some really obscure stuff, you might do worse than follow our weekly suggestions at Something for the Weekend? (second link in my signature). There's something for every taste, and a lot of it is not your stereotypical prog.

Ozric Tentacles Magma Meshuggah Anglagard Soft Machine These 5 bands are amazing. Hats off to VDGG & Peter Hammilll, too. I think I could live with the albums by of all these happily ever after..........

I know 4 from this list, Magma and Ozzric Tentacle have some really cool stuffs.

Well it does depend on your definition
It is one of the abiding truths of prog rock that no-one can agree on a definition or which is the first prog rock album. We have come to accept these facts. All of these bands are already on PA or closely associated with bands that are, except the cellar and point. My prog definition tends to be as broad as anyone here as I accept all sub-genres currently listed here and some that aren't

Thank you very much for introducing me to Somnambulist. It is, indeed, a weird, but excellent band. Their first album is more experimental and obscure (especially the vocals), their second more conventional and structured. I'll check the other bands, too.
