I did this Youtube compilation to gather quite unknown prog bands.

This is mostly CDs I bought 2nd hand through the years.
I'm not a prog expert, so some feedbacks would be welcome :)

Thanks for the answer.

Didn't know they are famous in the style,
never heard about them before I ordered the CDs in local shops :)

Mostly familiar with the big names in prog, and some prog metal stuffs

you found a good site... we have plenty of fans of all that popular English sh*t... but more importantly there is a significant number here that are interested in exploring past the same old same old and finding the real gems outside the English world.

I wouldn't call them famous... though Echoyln (for some reason that escapes me for I think they are boring as hell personally) have a significant fan base. Gerard had an champion in the early formative days of the site (Erik for the old school members... god I wonder what he is up to) that turned on a great many people that didn't know of them, myself included.  Get the Live in Marseille album from them.. fricking incredible album.

The Ske album, Mille Autunni, is actually quite nice and melodic, and not scary at all. Another Avant band that usually encounters the favour of more 'traditional' prog fans is Miriodor (Avanti! is one of the top 10 albums of the past 15 years, in my humble opinion). Anyway, if you want to expand your horizons with some really obscure stuff, you might do worse than follow our weekly suggestions at Something for the Weekend? (second link in my signature). There's something for every taste, and a lot of it is not your stereotypical prog.

Cheikha Rimitti female Algerian singer born in 1923
Prog. legend Robert Fripp (lead-g)
East Bay Ray, from Punk band: Dead Kennedys (rtm-g)
Flea from Red Hot & Mars Volta (bass)

Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

I never heard about these bands.

This seemed to be quite frightening at first...
But when I read your descriptions on the right, it seems (I said seems) half of these don't play progressive rock Wink

Cheikha Rimitti sounds pretty cool

When was it released?

Well it does depend on your definition Smile
It is one of the abiding truths of prog rock that no-one can agree on a definition or which is the first prog rock album. We have come to accept these facts. All of these bands are already on PA or closely associated with bands that are, except the cellar and point. My prog definition tends to be as broad as anyone here as I accept all sub-genres currently listed here and some that aren't Wink

Now if you want some 'relatively' obscure mainstream prog bands I'm not an expert but I'd offer up

England
Abrete Gandul
Algernon
Makajodama
Sanhedrin
Sympozion
Yezda Urfa

Thank you very much for introducing me to Somnambulist. It is, indeed, a weird, but excellent band. Their first album is more experimental and obscure (especially the vocals), their second more conventional and structured. I'll check the other bands, too.

Out of those five, I know Echolyn and Soma. Gerard sounds really cool.
I'll give you a few more bands to try out since we're at it

Kōenji Hyakkei
Ruins
Factor Burzaco
Spiral Architect
Unexpect

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.
