I listen to them now consequently, both fill my soul and spirit with joy and courage.

what makes me like them is their evolution and sound, the massive sound of Deftones and the elegance of Incubus.

Deftones.

Even though their legacy rests almost completely on White Pony, that still puts them lightyears ahead of Incubus.

i lean a little bit more on the self titled album, it has a desperateness and power which i like, a directness but also nimble.

Incubus

Even though their legacy rests almost completely on Make Yourself (or possibly SCIENCE), that still puts them lightyears ahead of Deftones.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is still my favorite Incubus disc. They took some elements of Fungus Amongus, added in some more mature song writing and made magic. They took it a step further with Make Yourself, but by that time had begun the slide to (IMO) more boring and mellow music. I wish they had retained more of the aggression seen on those early albums.

Interesting..

I have tried Deftones, but never really got the hang of it.
Incubus is far more adventurous, I especially like Morning View.
Incubus is also rather progressive. Really great stuff...

By the time of Morning View I felt they had lost much of the edge and energy of the earlier albums. However, that happens with so many bands.

They started out really funky.
Than they jumped on the numetal bandwagon and then they matured.

Like all bands, nostalgia is very important. When you're young and discovering new bands, the first album(s) you get into are Always the most important.
New albums can't compete with that. All over the internet on all musicforums people say the same thing: the first albums were the best, and [insert bandname] never topped that.

I agree that Incubus is more adventourus and have a groove which is uniqly theirs and a knack for smart odd-time changes.

To me Deftones seems like a precurser for the progressive sound which bands like Mastodon and Mars Volta wear aiming at, with the combination of hardcore directness and post punk atmosphere, but also witha direct influence from bands like Meshuggah and Fear Factory. A like Tool but more cohesive IMO. There is a certain power to the riff assault of Deftones that makes them a stepping board to bands like Gojira and Meshuggah.

I think both tags experimental and art metal which they are labled in wikipedia is fitting. They have an atmosphere which is relatableto post-metal, with elements of shoegaze and bands like Depeche Mode and Cure ass one source of influence.

guitarist Carpenter also utelize the power of the 8-string to chugg out some brutal hell.

Incubus easily, one of my favorite bands.

I can't stand most of Deftones's stuff.

Deftones are p good though too inconsistent to be great. I don't really like Incubus much at all.
