Topic: Killing Jokes sound Posted: April 02 2017 at 01:13
one of my favourite bands of all time, Killing Joke has a unique sound
but who is responsible for the sound. who has given KJ its most signature
SIGNATURE stamp, is it Jazs vocals, growls and shouts + he’s cool synth work,
which influenced NIN and Faith NO More to incorporate the exact same use of
synth, Kevin Goerdies guitar, the ultra-heavy, yet nimble and fuzzy, sound with
its unique tuning, and bottom feel. Tribal and hypnotic drum grooves which
pulls you inside the campfire or the gloomy, spunky and distinct bass by either
Youth or Raven.

I've only heard their debut, but if I had to choose what made them most different, it would probably be the synths. Nice group, nothing too special for me, but enjoyable.

i made it 20 odd minutes in... so I tried.. definitely wasn't bad...but not really my thing. Didn't really catch anything particularly distinctive about it. Music for 20 somethings filled with angst.... definitely not my thing.

Went for Jazz Coleman's vocals and synths..
A strange and awkward band, who at times I have loved and other times have ignored for long periods, but certainly in my teens and early twenties I loved everything from the debut, up to and including Outside the Gate.

For me, it's hard to say what element in KJ's music is the most responsible for their sound: I think it's the combination of Coleman's vocals, Geordie's guitar parts, Youth's bass parts and the drumming that make TOGETHER this sound. I would only dismiss the role of the synthesizers as something really important in the KJ sound and style: they may sound prominent on their first LP, but records such as Fire Dances (1983) or Pandemonium (1994) are more guitar-riden than keyboards-riden.
