Sometimes I see Porcupine Tree referred to as a progressive metal band and was just wondering what those on here thought of that.

Starting with In Absentia, there are some metal influences, that's why you may see them as prog metal. I don't agree though, they are so much more...

Yeah, I agree. It doesn't seem like they ever did a track that was full on prog metal all the way through though. To call PT metal though would be like calling Queen or Van Halen metal(or even Led Zeppelin for that matter).

There were moments when Steven pushed the metal boundary - on In Absentia and maybe parts of Fear of a Blank Planet and even The Incident - but they were just different soundscapes rather than a shift in genre. Porcupine Tree moved through New Age, Space Rock, Prog Rock, Post-Rock, Alt-Rock, Pop, Metal and even Jazz, and no description other than 'progressive' really fitted them - which is why young Steven would get his knickers in a twist if any poor music journalist ever tried to pigeon-hole him or the band.

Yep, having reggae elements in a song(a few rush songs come to mind)doesn't make them reggae.

Were they ever porcupines? Were they ever trees? The answer to all of these questions and yours is NOOOOO!

They did employ ample uses of heavy alternative rock into some albums but i wouldn't say they made it quite into metal territory. Even on MMA they are only listed as metal related where we have the power to tag each album separately.

The real question is... are they progressive? Umm. OK, they are :) But closer to prog pop than classic bigwig prog

MMA is pretty accurate for the most part. I think for a while the earliest metal albums on their were "sad wings of destiny" and something by Scorpions or UFO maybe. Now they have Budgie as "traditional heavy metal"(which surprises me since their early stuff seems more more blues based to me) and not proto metal which I don't quite agree with but not a big deal. I agree with them on most stuff.

^ yeah, the proto / hard rock pre-80s stuff is a bit of a mixed bag and hasn't reached resolution. There are plans to reorganizie the entire hard rock / proto tag. Personally i would call Porcupine Tree heavy prog for their later albums and psychedelic space rock for their early ones. The ones in between are kind of a mix at times

Well, the early stuff up to and including Signify was PF influenced. Signify was a bit of a transition album imo. Then came the alternative period which imo really only lasted two albums which were Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun(recordings seems more PF inspired and spacey despite the fact it was recorded around the same time). In Absentia is another transition album imo since it has a lot of the same elements as SD and LS but with an added heavy element at times. The heavy element was present on the next two also(probably even more so). I haven't heard "the incident" so I can't officially comment but from what I understand it's a bit of a departure from the heaviness of the previous two or three albums.
