Topic: What about Black Sabbath ? Posted: September 19 2005 at 14:58 |
It would be wrong to say that Black Sabbath is a progressive rock band. But since you've reviewed albums from artists such as Opeth or Cynic (which in my opinion are kind of different from what a hardcore prog fan would expect to see here ) i would like to make a comment.Tony Iommi unquestionable leader of Black Sabbath was always searching for his musical excellence .He wasn't a great musician after all,but hey, prog is not just playing with unbelievable technique.Surely i can't compare him with Robert Fripp Or David Gilmour but i always thought that his composing abilities were incredible.
In my opinion Sabbath Bloody Sabbath ,Technical Ecstasy and Never say die should be on this site.Afterall a huge musician called Rick Wakeman has contributed on SBS.They come from a different backround and they've influenced heavy metal as a genre. But look at what Rush have done. They have started as a bluesy/Zeppelin influenced band and some years later they were Canada's national prog heroes.
Progressive isn't just playing 100 notes per second nor changing rhythm every minute. It's about experiment with different kind of styles and creating something new..So is there anybody that finds the elements that i found on these albums ?

Black Sabbath is prog-related, but you surely can't mean that just
because Opeth and Cynic are prog-metal that they're as 'questionable'!

Dunno, I'm a pretty hardcore prog fan, and I'd say that Cynic are as complex as any of the 70's offerings.

Not yet..It's difficult to find albums like that in Greece.Propably because their music was too complex .I didn't know that there is a remaster of this album...!I have the older version though

The remaster is EXCELLENT, the sound quality is unreal!
It's also got a lot of bonus tracks... some remixes of the songs,
and some demos of the never-released Portal album.
Gordian Knot has some ex-Cynic members, it's more subdued but VERY complex.

Maybe some of their albums could be added to some "prog related" section, like DEEP PURPLE was. But I ain't gonna go up to the barricades for them...

Black Sabbath's earlier work i think is even progressive... "Wasp/Behind The Wall of Sleep/Bassically/N.I.B. or "A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning" or "Jack The Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots"

"You see right through disorted eyes..."
Yes I believe they deserve a place here on the archives if QUEEN and PURPLE are here not, why shouldn't the SABS I believe they've had their moments too, i am not saying they are crap or anything, as I love DEEP PURPLE'S music as I think they rock that's important to me, AOR I find hard to digest a bit sometimes but good PROG and ROCKING tunes I can go along with, probably of my age that is!
