Topic: Tom Kelly for Symphonic Rock Posted: November 19 2018 at 19:03 |
Hello, introducing Tom Kelly for suggestion for inclusion in
the Prog Archives. I have emailed, but found
this later as the preferred method and noted an error on my part that may get
it kicked back, eventually. Please feel
free to hack and slash if I’ve overstepped. Following your suggested procedure: Tom Kelly is the Artist ~ Possible Subgenre of Symphonic Prog, or Psychedelic Prog or perhaps Symphadelic. I leave it to the experts of the subgenres to make a final determination. I will contact your Symphonic team leader separately, as suggested. A native of Palos Verdes, CA, Tom began guitar lessons at 5, studying with a protégé of Andres Segovia. He began composing for electric instruments in the late 1960’s, inspired by the classical rock and psychedelic movements. By 1971, he was writing the parts in notation to distribute to his band members. A music producer of the time dubbed it “classical music for electric instruments.” The releases offered are all written and performed solely by Tom, on electric and acoustic guitars, bass and keyboards of all sorts and span years from 1978 through 2013. I offer some youtubes for listening, due to ease of uploading here. Much of his writing consisted of extended variations on themes, so bear in mind that these are parts of larger pieces. There are 3 CD’s of material in all, compiled after his death in 2017 and released in September 2018. First is the title and final track of “Spinning In Eternity,” it is the ultimate track of a suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1bcvoaiuSE Second is a track from “Burnt Peas/The Tolling of St. John’s Bells,” also part of a suite, “God and the Flatlanders”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBSbbMk799k Third is a track from “A Quail’s House,” you guessed it, part of an extended suite, “A Slight Overture of Sorts”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da9oZpP_5rE Fourth is something that is not part of a suite, at least not exactly. From “Burnt Peas/The Tolling of St. John’s Bells, “Sloppy Love At Bodie Flats:” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRoxKIKj9BM Official website is https://tomkelly.hearnow.com rdtprog had a great suggestion, here is a link to them all, you just need to scroll down a bit on the page to see a list of all three entire albums. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoYOGRMKXe7gs8iCJa5jj9w Update 01/08/19: Link to UK Reviewer Gareth Page's Prog Blog with review of all three CD's: http://progblog.co.uk/discovery-7/4594506004

Was going to listen now, but these clips are no longer available. We cannot evaluate without samples.

Sorry, not one of them works for me. I did however listen to some of the snippets on the artist's website. Sounds promising, but full tracks are needed for evaluation. |

If you put the album title in the YouTube search bar you can listen to those albums. Sound like a cross between Enid and Mick Oldfield. I would give this band a Yes.

Thank you all, I will attempt to fix the individual links on the first post, but rdtprog has the best suggestion, here is a link to them all, you just need to scroll down a bit on the page to see a list of all three entire albums.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoYOGRMKXe7gs8iCJa5jj9w The website link also takes you to listenable tracks, the other two releases as well, with a scroll-down and extra thanks, rdtprog.

The clips are blocked in certain countries, but I used a VPN service and was able to listen. |

SouthSideoftheSky, If there is anything else I can do to assist you, please let me know. I can easily send you (or anyone else encountering this) tracks or the entire works other ways, if you let me know a preferred method.
And also for the hint to use a VPN system for those who may also encounter any stumbling blocks. I didn't know that some were blocked, can't imagine why, unless it's just a typical course of action because of time of piece, or something in the title, country of origin? Regardless, I truly appreciate your taking the time and the extra effort.

No problem! YouTube is very unreliable, but with VPN I can access all content. Thank you for contributing to Prog Archives.

Small steps...Sold the first CD's to a person in Japan and was rated 4 stars by a person in Rate Your Music...Learned that something from them was aired on The Gagliarchives Radio program. 3 fans can't be wrong!
