Surprised nobody has mentioned The Goblin  ( or misnamed, as in the credits on one late night horror movie on the TV last month, The Goblins), who have made a career out of instrumental prog soundtracks - as Morte Macabre  paid tribute to on their Holocaust album.

Funny you say that- I just purchased "Dawn of the Dead" and noted that the music was credited to Dario Argento and The Goblins...I thought the band might have just been the Argento version of John Carpenter's soundtrack work.

Mi fave TD soundtrack is that for Friedkin's The Wages of Fear: the album is called Sorcerer, and was produced by the TD in 1976, but wasn't published until 1978, when Peter Baumann was about to leave the band.

Amazing stuff: in many ways, a return to their Atem/Phaedra days, yet maintaining some of the orchestral sensibility they developed during their 75-78 era.

Regards.

Quote Surprised nobody has mentioned The Goblin

It's just Goblin, and check the first page of this thread again.

I've got over twenty Goblin CDs, myself. One of my favorite bands.

Also, Goblin keyboardist Claudio Simonetti has a slew of film scores to his credit (some are Argento films, some aren't) and Claudio continues the Goblin tradition with Daemonia.

Certif1ed,

Is it the soundtrack version you're referring to, or the original album which had Ian Gillan and Murray Head on it? The film came sometime after the album, as indeed (I think) did the stage show.

If I remember correctly, the visual adaptions only came later once Lloyd Webber and Rice had managed to drum up some interest in the project. Anyway, assuming it's that album you're referring to, I agree entirely. An excellent piece of music which would warrant inclusion in the "Various artists" section of this site.

Somebody asked if Tommy was Prog', believe it was Certif1ed, good question. I've seen endless debates about this album, I believe it has many progressive characteristics, like  being conceptual (even though not every conceptual album is prog') and has many songs that can be qualified as prog' rock, like Overture, Underture and Amazing Journey; which are absolutely complex songs.

Of course there's POP material like Pinball Wizard and lots of classic Rock, but along with Quadrophenia are the only proggy adventures by The Who.

I agree about Jesus Christ Superstar, there are many great progressive songs, like Overture, Heaven's On their Minds, Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say) and John 19:41.

But as Easy Livin said I believe we are talking about the original Opera released in May 1971, not about the movie with those two terrible songs added for the big screen.

Lets remember Lloyd Webber was always influenced by the music that was in fashion when his works are released and if prog was ever fashion was in the early 70's.

all i know is that many pink floyd albums sync up in synificant ways to films. dark side syncs with wizard of oz and echoes and atom heart mother sync up with two different scenes from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also More is a brilliant soundtrack. other soundtracks they contributed on were La Vallee (Obscured by clouds), zabriskie point and tonight, lets all make love in london.

Yes did the soundtrack for homeworld with the ladder. Omar Rodriquez from the mars volta has recently done a solo album which is a soundtrack.

Also you have musicals like The Wall and Tommy. and Quadrophenia is a prog double album turned into a film but not based on the music of the album, just the story.

I really love this soundtrack (and of course the movie)

Doldinger's music for 'The Neverending Story' was also good. And it surelly must have been an influence in the epic-prog group Rhapsody.

Judging by the reviews of Pink Floyd's "Obscured By Clouds", it's not very popular and is often rated lower than other Floyd albums. But I think it's the business, so I'm glad to see zappa123 also likes it.

You know, I really like More and I think it's almost as good as one of their 'regular' albums (especially since the album was recorded in a week!) but for me, Obscured by Clouds sounds more like half-finished outtakes half the time. And this is from a guy who loves Ummagumma

I've never heard the soundtrack myself, but it got a reference from an unlikely source: Aqua Teen Hunger Force (in an episode titled "PDA"). Yep, the same unique, darkly hilarious surreal cartoon show that has mentioned Geddy Lee (Meatwad spent most of an episode quoting "Fly by Night" and "Spirit of Radio"). I suspect that at least one of the writers is either a past or present proghead.

What about the new album by Kevin Moore. It's called "Ghost Book" and is the soundtrack for a movie called "Okul"...I don't know it but I ordered the album...
Does anyone know this soundtrack?
