I've been in a Cardiacs mood the last few days and while going thru some of my rarer MP3s I came across recordings by "Mr & Mrs Smith and Mr Drake". This was a tape with demos by the main writiers of the Cardiacs namely Tim Smith (guitar/singer), Sara Smith (sax) and William Drake (keys).  This tape was only available to people who subscribed to the Cardiacs newsletter in the late eighties. What makes this recording rather unique is the fact that they only play accoustic instruments. Gone are all the punk stylings sans the electric guitars and with the accoustic guitar and sax it sounds rather like Gentle Giant crossed with early King Crimson.

Listen to this: http://www.flatearth.demon.nl/cardiacs_your_removal.mp3

This is a nice example that you don't electricity to write prog music. Other examples?

I've uploaded another track from the same recordings, this time http://www.flatearth.demon.nl/cardiacs_camouflage.mp3

BTW I read that a number of the "Mr & Mrs Smith & Mr Drake" recordings are to be found on an album by the "Sea Nymphs". This was William Drake's project after he left the Cardiacs and also features Mr & Mrs Smith of course. I haven't heard it  and it's very rare it seems.

We saw the acoustic Strawbs a few years ago and I was absolutely blown away!!! Of course they are all accomplished musicians who have been playing together for many years but the interplay on guitar between Dave Lambert and Dave Cosuins had to be seen to be believed. It was such a powerful sound yet so pure.

roger waters is good offering acoustic prog songs such as "cirrus minor", "is there anybody out there?", "if", "grantchester meadows" and "pigs on the wing" are a few great examples. and there is the new yes acoustic dvd but that dont look to tempting.
