If genesis had started with and then there where three and you did not have previous albums like foxtrot and the lamb lies down on broadway to compare it with...would you rate the albums higher or lower or exactly the same you think?

The same, I'm sure. I try to take albums for what they're worth, not by what I'm expecting them to be. If I didn't, I probably wouldn't like Genesis (or Queen for an alternate example) very much.

Blimey, I don't remember seeing you around here before Lindsay. I thought you were very good in Herbie by the way.
What was the question again? Oh yes, Genesis. I think they definitely suffer in comparison to their earlier works but then again since they became more popular, there must be a lot of people who prefer the more commercial stuff. I'd guess I'd probably prefer the later stuff if they hadn't made the earlier stuff. Probably a bit of unconscious sl*gging-off going on.

I'm sure that if the first thing I had listened by Genesis would have been ATTW3 or any later stuff I wouldn't consider them my all time favorite band.

Not because of prejudice, but because the first impression also counts, that's why many younger progheads don't consider Genesis as a classic, because it's harder to take seriouisly a band that plays Illegal Alien ad nauseam on all radio stations and cheesy MTV.

Still I'm sure that I would like their early stuff because my taste would have to change dramaticly to dislike them, but it would have been harder to give them a real chance to grow on me after listening only Invssible Touch or We Can't Dance.

I feel that Genesis quality left in the same moment that Hackett left the band (They had already lost a good part with Gabriel's departure).

Iván

Edit: If Madonna, Britney or N'Sync recorded a magnifiscent Progressive Epic today, would you forget all the crap they released before?

I know it's a subjective perspective, but in our minds they will always be the cheesy artists they were yesterday.

I'm with Snow Dog. Genesis would not existed in my life if the first album was ATTWT. Being a true prog-head as I am, I would have just considered them as another boring pop band, and moved on. By the way Lindsay, if that's your photo on this post, then someone should start a new post with the topic heading "Most beautiful Non-Musician Prog Babe!" I mean why not? Prog fan babes are rare indeed, and girl you are quite a good looker! There's a post already for "Most beautiful Prog-Babe in a Prog band."

This poll is too biased. ....As if Genesis were the only band that lowered their quality and status.

Why doesnīt anybody make polls like this for Emersonīs "Love beach" or "Tormato". The real reason for this is that Genesisī albums after 1976 were always better than the otherīs. Or..is there any need to argue about YESīs albums in the 80īs ??. They were so bad that donīt even deserve to be bashed.

People who want to see Genesis as a bad band always mediate Old Genesis with 80īs Genesis and compare it to otherīs output from 1970 to 1976. Thatīs absurd.

Whatīs the deal with people making emphasis on one of many examples of bands who start making albums not as good as the first 4 or 5 ?. ...Try with Jethro, YES, Emerson, try talking about the lack of originality of Pink Floyd after Animals, try with Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf, Rush, Banco, Premitta, Focus, ..you name it.

Good topic.

Genesis' pop was REALLY GOOD POP... Naturally, no proggers like pop (for good reason), so they didn't give Genesis credit, for making good pop. but if you compare Genesis' pop (and all the "Prog bands gone bad pop" for that matter), it's so much better than todays pop, Britney Spears, whatever you call it...

Thats why I would say if you compare Genesis' pop era to foxtrot, duh you wont like it as much but if you compare them to today's pop, or other 80-90's pop you might appreciate their music alot more.
