Hi, welcome to the forums.
I'm one of the younger members on the forum (16), but it's hardly noticeable with my superior wit!
Random favorites- Pain of Salvation (try them if you like Dream Theater), The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Anglagard, Taal.
|
Thanks for the welcome.
A couple of these I've never heard of (Spock's Beard,Transatlantic). Pain of Salvation...hmmm... sounds familiar. I'll definately check them out. Thanks much.
Actually,I didn't realize Dream Theater had so many albums...nice.
I'm quite surprized to see so many young people into progressive music...It's refreshing, actually.
|
Check out some of the samples on the site and see if you like them. Spock's Beard and Transatlantic are similar, but TA are a prog supergroup with Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). TA only released 2 studio albums before breaking up, and they're both fantastic. Live in Europe is also a great live DVD.
I suggest starting with Snow by Spock's Beard if you're interested. It's a fantastic double album which is easily my favorite by them. V, The Light, and Day for Night are also good.

Hey,Bluesaga(Mike).
Thanks for all the input. I've checked out quite a few samples on the site...so far haven't even scratched the surface of all the great music I've never heard. Maybe you could help me out... Dream Theater -Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.... is the rest of the album as good as "Solitary Shell"? Which DVD should I get first? "The Number of the Beast"-live & "Master of Puppets"-live... both awesome albums... do they do a job of them? Thanks in advance.
Some of bands I've discovered and like(love) are: Porcupine Tree,Van Der Graaf Generator,Gentle Giant,Spock's Beard, etc. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to buy much new stuff yet. I'm too busy trying to build/rebuild my music collection. Lately picked up... Yes-Relayer,Tales from Topographic Oceans, Close to the edge... Rush-Permanent Waves... Genesis-Selling England by the Pound...
Wow... How did I live without these... I guess if you don't have them, you don't miss them,....errr,you don't know you miss them.
Cheers

Hey Anguiad
Yeah,PearlJam...some of the best guitar riffs I've ever heard. As far as Eddie Vedder goes,I think alot of people just can't get past his voice. He's hard to understand.Personally,I think these guys are very unique.Great Band.
Honestly, some of the newer Prog on this site I've never heard. But I can tell you my top10 classic Prog bands would be (for today, anyway):
1.Yes 2.Genesis 3.Rush 4.King Crimson 5.Pink Floyd 6.Emerson,Lake & Palmer 7.Jethro Tull 8.PeterGabriel 9.AlanParsonsProject 10.DreamTheater
Other bands listed on this site I like: Deep Purple, Traffic, Tool
As far as recommending particular albums(CD's), depends what your looking for,but the list of top rated albums on this site is impressive!
