I'm curious about certain prog bands which aren't necessarily 'giants' yet produce high quality music: what would you recommend?

Some of my favorite bands/artists: Rush, Supertramp, Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd

Thanks in advance.

Aren't 'giants' per se but stay true to the progressive rock sound of the 70's:

Van Der Graaf Generator

Anglagard

Spring

Frank Zappa

Caravan

Hatfield And The North

I don't see King Crimson mentioned!

Give the early Queen records a go too, They're all fantastic, With heavy prog influence

Try 'Leftoverture' by Kansas. That should go someway to satisying your taste for symphonic prog. A good insight into how good US prog was at the time.

'Frances the Mute' The Mars Volta.. Prog rock 21st century style

'Ashes are Burning' or 'Turn of the cards' by Rennaisnce. Brilliant, beautiful music, pure and sinple. Classical meets folk meets rock.

'In the Region of the Summer Stars' by The Enid - challenging pure symphoic prog. Very orchestral and dramatic.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
