From Brasil, I think we have:
- 'Aquarela do Brasil' (or simply 'Brasil', known for the soundtrack of "Brazil - the movie");
- 'Garota de Ipanema' (The girl from Ipanema'), one of the greatest elevator musics of all times ;
- 'Meu limão, meu limoeiro' ('Lemon tree'), there's a healthy discussion between Brasilians and Americans about the fatherhood of this song, but this tune is documented here since the beginning of the 19th century;
- Many other bossa nova songs: 'Desafinado', 'Wave', 'One note samba', 'Corcovado', etc, all recorded by singers like Sinatra, Ella, Sarah, etc.
However, I'd like to see my country be remembered by Heitor Villa-Lobos's 'Bachianas Brasileiras, no. 5 aria - cantilena' as sung by soprano Bidu Sayão. This recording was made in New York, in 1938, and was considered by critics as "perfect".
