So recently I have just been wondering about this, and talking about it with my family, and they have no idea, so I'm gonna try you guys.

The english songs which I have dubbed as power ballads are the songs that will last forever and are often the most memorable songs of all time. I'm talking of course about songs like:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
The Eagles - Hotel California
Don McLean - American Pie
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird

well I know there are plenty more songs out there that shall always be remembered, but those just seem to be the most recognizable. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of the songs that everyone recognizes in other languages. I'm not talking about a spanish version of Bohemian Rhapsody, but I was wondering what songs are huge in the non-english speaking countries. This is purely for my own curiosity, but if anyone knew any, it would be really cool. Thanks

Dahil Sa' Yo ( Because of You) is a standard here in the Philippines. It was a song written for our former first lady, Imelda Marcos. Not a "power" ballad though.

English  ballads that made it big here:

Open Arms-- Journey

Almost all of Chicago's ballads

I need You-- America

Hey Jude-- The Beatles

to name a few...

From Brasil, I think we have:

  1. 'Aquarela do Brasil' (or simply 'Brasil', known for the soundtrack of "Brazil - the movie");
  2. 'Garota de Ipanema' (The girl from Ipanema'), one of the greatest elevator musics of all times ;
  3. 'Meu limão, meu limoeiro' ('Lemon tree'), there's a healthy discussion between Brasilians and Americans about the fatherhood of this song, but this tune is documented here since the beginning of the 19th century;
  4. Many other bossa nova songs: 'Desafinado', 'Wave', 'One note samba', 'Corcovado', etc, all recorded by singers like Sinatra, Ella, Sarah, etc.

However, I'd like to see my country be remembered by Heitor Villa-Lobos's 'Bachianas Brasileiras, no. 5 aria - cantilena' as sung by soprano Bidu Sayão. This recording was made in New York, in 1938, and was considered by critics as "perfect".
