Tragic. He wrote and sang some classic songs that will live forever. I recently heard a newer version of "I'm gonna be strong" by some folk/country guy that reminded me of how cool that particular song is.

I didn't realise until today that he wrote Hello Mary Lou and Rubber Ball. Two great songs.

He also wrote "He's a Rebel" by the Crystals (featuring the famous Phil Specter "Wall of Sound"). |

Yeah I heard about that...indeed, a very sad loss, particularly as he'd played a gig that went down great at St Davids Hall (not far from my area actually) not long before. Gene was a true legend that had one of the most distinctive and best voices out there. I always ranked him as being, alongside Roy Orbison, perhaps the only pre-Beatles, post Buddy Holly era singers of any worth. He almost always wrote his own material, and often supplied some of the popular (albeit rather anodyne, teen idol singers like Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson) singers of the era. Compare his emotionally powerful tunes such as 'Something's Gotta Hold Of My Heart' and 'I'm Gonna Be Strong' to the horribly cloying nonsense that the likes of Neil Sedaka and the rest of the Brill Building/Tin Pan Alley crew churned out... He'll be missed... |

OH, IT'S SUCH A SHAME.
IT'S SO TRUE THAT IT'S ALWAYS THE BEST TO GO. WHY COULDN'T MARC ALMOND HAVE DIED INSTEAD? NO-ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD HAVE MISSED HIM. Edited by Minkia |
