Topic: Spock’s Beard Snow Posted: April 16 2006 at 00:40 |
I bought this album a couple of weeks ago and I just love it. It's two hours of great music. It's really a lot of fun and very enjoyable to listen to, pure pleasure. I could imagine a lot of proggers may be turned off by its straight ahead, 'popular' rock and roll style; but Morse delivers song after song of great melodies and sing along choruses. There are also allusions to everything from JC Superstar, The Lamb, Tommy, Quadrophenia, and Metropolis. If it had come out in 1978, it would have been huge. It's strange that an album that is so accessible would get no airplay on classic rock radio. Things are really that bad. What do others think of this album and its lack of recognition in the mainstream?

Fantastic record...
And I'm an atheist. I look beyond all the Christian allegory and just
see a great album of great music. People who bitch about it being "too
pop" are just not willing to admit that Neal has done a great job of
mixing pop and prog into a wonderful series of songs worthy of becoming
a prog classic.
Great stuff.
EDIT: As far as it not getting mainstream airplay...where have you
been? At least in my neck of the woods (Wash DC), even slightly proggy
stuff gets ignored as a rule. It sucks but its true.

Snow is probably my favorite Spock's Beard disc. I definitely see it as being that bridge between V and his Testimony CD after leaving SB. Morse is simply brilliant and has a way of reaching right inside of you. Excellent disc! I'm from midwestern America, which is a prog wasteland. Stuff like this would never be considered. E

I don't own Snow, but I've heard there are a lot of fillers. Is that true???

No more filler than double albums like Floyd's "The Wall", Yes' "Tales", or Genesis' "The Lamb"
Any double album is gonna have its down time, but it still rules.

Snow, great album. I love that term "filler". This is Progressive Rock we are talking here!

Good post Snow was my first album by Spock's Beard, and took a few plays for me to fully appreciate it. I really think it's one of the best symphonic prog albums, along with V and The Light, since the '70s. There isn't any "filler" on Snow, however there are some tracks that are weaker in comparison, but still good. Disk 2 isn't quite as good as disk 1, but it's still very good. Considering you can get Snow for something like $15, you really can't go wrong.

Great album, although I prefer "Beware of Darkness" or "V". If you like Snow so much you'll love Neal Morse's "Testimony" which is in the same style.

I totally agree, i'm atheist too. There are a lot of really great passages on this album, and i find it with less filler than many other double cd's, in my opinion a 5 stars album.

I would say this is one of SB's greatest albums and stacks up nicely with V, both are excellent in their own right but Neal's ability to make understandable concept albums is one of a kind. You can very nearly follow it with out reading along which is one thing i love. If you like the concept of Snow and are interested in the music as much as the christian aspect i would highly recommend One by Neal Morse. It's about Creation, which our non-christian proggers may not be too keen of. But I might be wrong. In any case Neal is an excellent composer and musician. As far as mainstream air play not hearing any prog ever doesn't surprise me. Hearing the occaisional Tull, Kansas, Supertramp on a classic rock station is a welcome suprise. But i don't expect many if any prog bands at all to get air time.

I've been listening to Snow a lot lately. It's a great album, I've still not heard anything better from Spock's Beard. The ending "Wind at my back" is such a great song and a very powerful ending. There are loads of other good songs (Freak Boy, Looking for Answers, Long Time Suffering etc) and it's very well produced.
