I noticed this concept album didn't get much recognition here so I decided to start a thread on it.

Well, it may seem strange but Thing-Fish was my starting point in exploration of Frank Zappa's realm (to be precise I'd heard Strictly Commercial before and liked it enough to start looking for other releases of Mr Zappa). I bought it mostly because it was a double album . My main trouble with this album is the "dialect" used by the main character - Thing-Fish - what doesn't allow me to comprehend the whole story, only parts of it... Can anyone enlighten me in this matter?

Now, I'd like to know your opinions on this album.

I enjoy listening to excerpts, but I can't stand the whole album. Not because it's too complex or demanding - it's simply too

SILLY.

I recommend Joe's Garage instead!Big smile

I like it. My guess is you won't find too many supports of it (i'd liked to be proved wrong on this). I like the "silly" nature, and sheer bizarreness of the concept. Though i would never recommend it as a starting point...Tongue

I have a thoery about the dialect but i can't put it into words Embarrassed, but i still like it, and find it adds alot to the humor.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

The dialect on "Thing-Fish" was based on the old radio program "Amos & Andy".  The name "Thing-Fish" is even based on the character Kingfish.

Far from Zappa's best, but entertaining enough, and very, VERY politically incorrect.  I doubt very much that it would ever be allowed on Broadway (which was Frank's intention).
