You mean all these years we've been thinking "wow, what a cool/ironic/nerdy/postironic/highly amusing/camp name for a band", and all the time they're named after the grooming idiosyncracies of a kiddie shrink ?

Not so much prog bands, but there were two NWOBHM bands with utterly woeful names- Toad The Wet Sprocket and Ethel The Frog. It's not just their names that are crap either!LOL

As for prog, I must say Pussy is one of the worst- it's an obvious attempt to attract controversy yet failed miserably as their album sold bugger all anyway!

Both cribbed from Monty Python, oddly enough.....

Awful band names:

1 Shadow Gallery
2 Symphony X
3 Pain of Salvation
4 Dream Theater
5 Dream Aria

Pretentious kitsch.

New Trolls Atomic System is so bad its good.

I used to have a cassette by Toad The Wet Sprocket!  Apparently some of the members have gone on to form a different band now.

Another awfully bad group and bad name (non-prog):

The Captain and Tennille

Plus some more:

DragonForce (although I believe this is deliberately pretentious)
The Master and the Synergitic Nuts (or whatever they're called!

There's an episode where Enterprise finds itself in a parallel universe, where, broadly speaking, the goodies are baddies, and the baddies even worse. There, the evil Mr Spock has a beard.......or so I'm told Wink

Personally, I think Spock's Beard is one of the classier prog names.....but not such a great band........Ying Yang

I did wonder if that was the case, one of those episodes where Spock developed a  sense of humour or fell in love (or both).

We could widen the remit to prog bands with plain awful names (I'll stick with Spocks Beard for this too) & Matching Mole.

"Matching Mole" is in fact a wordplay with "Soft Machine" (Robert Wyatt, the drummer of Matching Mole, had been a member of Soft Machine). "Soft Machine" is "Machine Moll" in French.
What about the Deep Freeze Mice (a band that should be in the archives)? Even their albums have silly names, like "My Geraniums Are Bulletproof", "Teenage Head in My Refrigerator", "Rain Is when the Earth Is Television" or "War, Famine, Death, Pestilence and Miss Timberlake".

With a name like Symphony X you just know you're gonna get some oveblown metal with keyboards and over the top lyrics, so it's defenatly consumer/user friendly. I stay away, while others buy.

I remember a norwegian band (Red Harvest) titled one of their records 'There is Beauty in the Purity of sadness'. Dead Can it get any less subtle? That title reminds me of the POS name.

Adagio, Beyond twilight, Beyond the Labyrinth, Time Requiem, Tomorrow's Eve, Canvas Solaris (!) etc... all these beautiful, mysteruous words used by not so mysterious progmetal acts. The words become meaningless and empty, like something they found in a dictionary, but don't know what means.

Out of context of the book, that's how meaningless Shadow Gallery becomes to me as well, Snowdog.

Dream Theater might work on some artsy black and white film from the 1920's, but not on one of the most pompous rock bands on the planet.
